Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 6 Clavierübung III / Schübler-Choräle / Canonische Veränderungen über 'Vom Himmel hoch' - ed. by Werner Breig Bach Organ Works Printed During the Composer's Lifetime Volume 6 contains the chorale-related organ works that Bach personally had printed: the Dritte Theil der Clavier Übung was published (for organists) in 1739; the Sechs Choräle von verschiedener Art (Schübler-Choräle) and the Canonische Veränderungen were released in separate editions most likely in 1747/48. None of these collections had from the start the appearance which the composer considered as valid in the end. For this reason, Werner Breig focuses in particular on questions of origin in his introduction. Fundamental findings on the genesis of the Clavier Übung III were made only after the publication of the work in the Neue Bach-Ausgabe. The basically unproblematic state of the sources means that this volume contains no CD-ROM with supplementary materials. It was, however, considered editorially necessary to print the Canonische Veränderungen BWV 769 in three versions: as a facsimile of the original print, in a practical arrangement, and in the autograph version (BWV 769a). Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 7 Orgelbüchlein - with CD-ROM - ed. by Sven Hiemke Of great practical value ?This edition has everything it takes to replace the Griepenkerl edition for practical music-making,? opined Rainer Goede (in ?kirchmusik.de?) immediately after the release of Volumes 5 and 6. If such a high degree of practical value is attested to these two volumes, then Volume 7 can proudly claim to have the highest practical value of all, since it has the greatest scope of all the volumes. After all, no organist can do without the basic repertoire of the 45 chorale preludes. Edited by Sven Hiemke, the book offers the best possible prerequisites for everyday use. The musical text is as faithful to the sources as possible, and it preserves Bach?s graphic idiosyncrasies in the beaming of eighth notes and sixteenth notes. Furthermore, the chorales are reproduced on three staves, which is fully in keeping with the practice of the Bach era ? but not with the source, however, since the composer himself notated the pieces of the ?Orgelbüchlein? on two staves, either for reasons of economy or for lack of space. The enclosed CD-ROM contains early versions and anonymous arrangements which should encourage organists to explore this repertoire in greater depth.

Bach: Complete Organ Works Vol. 1 Preludes and Fugues I - with CD-ROM - ed. by David Schulenberg As close as possible to Bach In his ?Preludes and Fugues,? Johann Sebastian Bach made decisive contributions to the development of this genre tradition. The importance of this work group in his own organ oeuvre is confirmed by the many transmitted sources: hardly any autographs, but all the more copies. The genesis of the works and the question of versions associated with it are described at length in the introduction. In his new edition, editor David Schulenberg occasionally makes a new evaluation of the transmitted sources. To do so, he based himself as faithfully as possible on the manuscripts that can be traced back to Bach or to his circle. Here the American Bach expert generally chooses one source as his principal one. Divergences from other sources are documented in the Commentary. On the whole, the new Urtext edition sometimes also emends some long-cherished readings of ornaments, voice leading and notation. Also printed in Volume 1 is, for example, the early version of the C major Prelude BWV 545 as well as the inserted Trio movement of the three-movement version of this work. As with the previously published volumes, the CD-ROM enclosed in Volumes 1 and 2 contains dubious works and secondary versions for comparison with the principal versions. Now all of Bärenreiter's new performing editions of Bach's organ works are being revised to reflect the current state of scholarship and to convey maximum fidelity to the sources by being linked to 'Bach digital'. The present volume is an updated edition of Series IV, Volume 6 of the 'New Bach Edition' (NBA), prepared by Dietrich Kilian in 1964. The discovery of new sources and a reassessment of existing handwritten copies have brought about changes to the contents of the volume, which now includes the 'Fantasia in C minor' (BWV 1121), the 'Fantasia in G major' (BWV 571), the 'Fugue in G major' (BWV 577) and the C major version of the 'Toccata and Fugue in E major' (BWV 566). Fantasie und Fuge a-Moll BWV 904 Bach probably composed Fantasia and Fugue around 1725 at the beginning of his Leipzig years. Hardly any of his keyboard works is so closely associated with his organ works. The remarks ,manualiter' in two of the surviving manuscripts suggest that it was also played on the organ. The character of the Fantasia is serious and grave. Even the interludes, despite their lighter texture, maintain an overall contemplative character. Its concerto form is strictly symmetrical. The main theme appears four times: in a-minor, e-minor, d-minor and finally a-minor. Three interludes often employ only three parts and effectively contrast the full harmony of the main theme. The four-part double fugue is an example of Bach's unique contrapuntal craftsmanship. He combines two notably contrasting themes: the first is diatonic, rhythmic and agile while the second consists of a descending chromatic line. It appears around the center of the movement after a short cadence cesura. Surprisingly, it is immediately presented in stretto form. At the end both themes are combined three times. Suite BWV 1006a. Baroque Lute version
The works of Johann Sebastian Bach which are generally considered to have been originally written for the lute (BWV 995-1000 and 1006a) are being published here in a series of practical editions. Unlike some other collections in Bach?s oeuvre, the lute works come from diverse sources and were never considered to be an organic unit during the composer?s lifetime. They were first grouped together at the end of the 19th century by the editors of the Bach Gesellschaft. The numbering of the Suites that is commonly used by guitarists today dates from the 1920?s.
Many questions remain regarding the playability of these works on the lute. The original keys are sometimes awkward, and there are problems of range and density of texture which can lead one to ask whether they were actually conceived for the lute at all. Interestingly enough, Bach?s solo Sonatas and Partitas for violin and his Suites for cello often lend themselves more organically to the lute.
As the problems relating to the so-called ?official? works became more clearly defined, a significant body of practical and musicological reflexions on these matters came to be published in different journals and editions. It is not my intention to go through this literature here, nor do I intend to discuss the varieties of sometimes very creative solutions that other lutenists may have utilized in approaching these pieces. My aim is, rather, to present playable versions in tablature for the standard 13-course lute of Bach?s time in the d minor tuning. I have steered clear of scordatura tunings and modifications to the instrument itself. In some cases, where the original key of a piece seemed unnecessarily cumbersome, I have changed it, taking it as a principle that there is nothing sacred in a tonality if it renders a piece, or parts thereof, unplayable. I feel that this approach starts with the music itself and seeks to bring it to life in a pragmatic spirit that is close to the 18th century.
Each edition in this series will have an introduction which discusses sources and specific points of interest or enigmas related to the individual piece. I feel that, ideally, every student of the lute should make his or her own versions of these pieces, and thus be directly confronted with problems related to them. Hopefully these editions will stimulate thought on these matters and also provide clear and practical solutions which can help one on his or her journey toward the incomparable expressiveness and depth of these works.
