The composer explains that they be played as Trio-Sonatas (2 Violins and basso continuo), as "Sonate a 4" (2 Violins, alto Viola and basso continuo), as "Sonate a 5" (2 Violins, alto and tenor Viola and basso continuo), or in "Concerto grosso" form. "Tutti" and "Solo" indications are provided by the composer for orchestral performance.
