A trumpet duet fanfare beckons the band to join in on the opening bars of this dignified elegant finale for holiday concerts. Staging opportunities abound with optional antiphonal brass parts and the celebratory mood of the featured carols Once In Royal David's City and Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day make this a wonderfully versatile work.

Cathedrals have always appealed to the imagination. Hundreds of years of manpower have been invested in their building and it is not for nothing that today they represent imposing symbols of architecture and history. The cathedral is also a great source of inspiration for compositions drawing on a full palette of acoustic echo effects Gregorian melodies and organ based choral themes.The work ?Catedrals? opens with a five tone motif using double tonguing which resonates through space. Then comes a Gregorian antiphonal theme ?Salve Regina? which is heard in the euphonium and later combines with the opening motif. The quicker passage that follows is basedentirely on the intervals in the motif which by now has added rhythmic variations and develops in different forms including a fugue. The work then builds towards its first climax from which unusual muted sounds emerge creating an atmosphere shrouded in mystery.Gradually more melodious fragments are added to the Gregorian antiphonal theme which develops into an expansive choral emulating the organ and which rises above the sound mass. The work grows more powerful and brilliant in sound until it culminates in a short and explosive finale wherein elements from the whole work come together.

Filled with rich musical imagery the opening section features prominent roles for alto and soprano sax soloists while the percussionsection provides a pulsating ostinato accompaniment. After a beautiful lyric section the fast pace returns with antiphonal tradeoffs and culminating in a bombastic statement from the entire ensemble. Dur: 6:00

for Trombone Ensemble-Tre Volti (Trois Visages) est une commande du prestigieux New Trombone Collective composé des meilleurs trombonistes des orchestres symphoniques néerlandais. La première mondiale assurée par la formation dédicataire a eu lieu le 16 avril 2011 au Doelen de Rotterdam dans le cadre du ?Slide Factory? le festival européen consacré aux trombones.Le compositeur souhaitait illustrer trois aspects de l?instrument en trois mouvements. Effetti e Tecniche (Effets et Techniques) évoque les nombreuses possibilités acrobatiques du trombone ainsi que l?emploi de sourdines pour obtenir différents timbres et couleurs. Ce mouvement développe de nombreux glissandi ainsi quedes mesures avec des demi-tons et quart de tons des effets ?typiques? du trombone. Le Lamento Lirico (Complainte Lyrique) tisse une trame à l?empreinte mélodique et aux motifs plutôt nobles et sérieux mettant en évidence l?une des caractéristiques que l?on n?associe pas toujours avec cet instrument. Le climat général de ce mouvement quelque peu triste et tendu fait référence aux nombreuses oeuvres orchestrales et opératiques où les trombones se voient attribuer des passages sombres et mélancoliques.Le dernier mouvement intitulé Sonata Antica s?inspire directement de deux sonates de Daniel Speer (1636-1707) pour trois et quatre trombones respectivement. Il illustre la dimension historique du trombone qui était d?ailleurs au Moyen Âge le seul cuivre capable de jouer chromatiquement grâce au système de coulisse et ce plusieurs siècles avant les autres cuivres. La forme antiphonale les motifs de dialogue et l?idiome ?ancien néo-baroque? rendent hommage à Daniel Speer. Le compositeur de Tre Volti a emprunté à sa manière plusieurs thèmes des sonates en Ré et en La pour conclure joyeusement cette composition aux multiples facettes.

This powerful work by Ian McDougall showcases all the brilliance and splendor of the brass sections in a setting that makes a distinctive opener for any performance. Given its festive nature and the options for antiphonal staging it works especially well for holiday performances.

A substantive yet quite playable festive work for concert band which features both brass and woodwind choirs as well as optional antiphonal brass choirs.

The first movement of this work an Allegretto begins with a fanfare-like opening. After a number of other melody lines a reprise of the beginning follows which ends in a cadenza for the soloist. Movement two titled Rituel is characterized by interplay between the soloist and the band within a stately melody. In the final movement the theme of the first movement’s opening returns. As the indication ‘alla marcia’ of the last movement suggests this Allegro Giocoso contains march-like music that guarantees a lively conclusion.With Concertino Kees Schoonenbeek has written an appealing work that is very suitable for a beginner soloist. It is also available for trumpet andpiano.

This attractive and uplifting anthem sets the text of the Eastertide Vidi aquam antiphon. Different parts of the text are treated to contrasting musical ideas including extended melismatic upper-voice passages and mainly homophonic full-choir sections and the undulating organ part represents the flowing water of the text. A welcome addition to a service or concert programme for all fans of Gabriel Jackson's music.Commissioned by the Friends of Lincoln Cathedral for their 75th anniversary and first performed by the Choir of Lincoln Cathedral with Charles Harrison (organ) directed by Aric Prentice on 25 June 2011.

This partner antiphon to Bednall's Alma Redemptoris Mater is fast and joyful. This pair of antiphons compliments Howells's setting of the other Marian antiphons (Salve Regina and Regina Caeli). The central section employs a Soprano solo and the divisi in the vocal parts creates a rich texture.
