Rheinberger's concert overtures are completely beholden to the tradition of the genre established at least since the 1820s. The spread of this genre was favored in equal measure by the growth of bourgeois musical culture and the overwhelming model of Beethoven's nine symphonies, which sowed a certain perplexity and discouragement among composers of the next generation and led them to turn increasingly to the smaller single-movement genre in their orchestral music. Soon a generic distinction arose between two types of overture. One was the autonomous overture, whose character results from its specific introductory function. Rheinberger's Academic Overture follows in this same line of tradition. The other type was the overture with subject-matter, in which the romantic inclination to recreate extra-musical material in music found an expecially fruitful field of exploration. Having originated as the opening item of an opera or play, the overture had, after all, long been accustomed to accommodating the contents of the work that followed. The concert overture on an extra-musical subject is in turn associated in particular with the works of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Rheinberger too, closely modeled his opp. 11 and 110 on Mendelssohn's overtures.

The German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Academic Fesival Overture in the summer of 1880, together with the Tragic Overture. The occasion was the honorary degree which Brahms had received a year before from the University of Breslau. Initially, Brahms had sent a thank-you note, but he was expected to express his gratitude with a composition. The premiere took place on 4 January, 1881 - conducted by the composer himself - in Breslau. For this sparkling work, Brahms used various German student songs as a basis in an inventive way - and a little jestingly. Owing to the accessible development, lyrical warmth, humor, and persuasiveness, the Academic Festival Overtureis still a popular concert work. This transcription for concert band, which has been written by Tohru Takahashi, does justice to the original composition.

Voor dit sprankelende werk gebruikte Brahms op inventieve wijze - en een tikje schertsend - verschillende Duitse studentenliederen als basis. Dankzij de toegankelijke opbouw, lyrische warmte, humor en meeslependheid is de AkademischeFestouvertüre nog altijd een geliefd concertwerk. Au cours de l’été 1880, le compositeur allemand Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) écrit son Ouverture pour une fête académique, op. 80. Elle est contemporaine de l'Ouverture tragique qui en est son pendant. Un an auparavant, Brahms avait été fait docteur « honoris causa » de l’Université de Breslau. Dans un premier temps, il se contenta d'une simple note manuscrite titre de remerciement, mais comprit rapidement que cela ne saurait suffire. Il composa donc l’Ouverture pour une fête académique en remerciement pour sa nomination. L’œuvre fut créée l’Université de Breslau, le 4 janvier 1881, sous la direction du compositeur. Sorte de fantaisiepétillante et inventive, l’Ouverture académique est constituée de plusieurs chansons estudiantines allemandes en vogue l’époque. En raison de son développement accessible, riche en expressivité, espiègle et lumineux, cette ouverture reste très largement appréciée de nos jours.Cette transcription pour Orchestre d’Harmonie signée Tohru Takahashi est fidèle l’œuvre originale.

Brahms Academic Festival Overture was composed in 1880 as a thank you to the University of Breslau which awarded him an honorary Doctorate. The work is a boisterous collection of student drinking songs but not without some of his patented dark melancholy in between sections.
Matthew McCrady has beautifully arranged the entire 10-minute work for 12-part Brass Ensemble, Timpani and Percussion, employing the rich sounds from Brahms' composition.
For advanced performers, the instrumentation is for:
4 Trumpets (2 in C, 2 in B-flat plus Flugelhorn), 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, 2 Euphoniums, Tuba, Timpani and 2 Percussion.
