My first string quartet is about small worlds. In this
movement Cello, viola, and violin II parts are easy.
Violin I is intermediate.
The school playground is another small world.
Playground time, unsupervised, was 60% sporty play, 40%
argument. But boys would organize and negotiate and
manage to make this work, at least until the next
recess. The girls were no doubt better behaved. At
least that is what they claimed.

String Quartet No. 1, is about
small worlds. Cello, viola,
and violin II are generally
easy. Violin I requires
familiarity with fifth
position for some of the
movements. The four movements
focus on four small or
contained worlds.
