Ave Maria is a melody by Charles Gounod.
Originally, this aria is an improvisation by Gounod on
the piano on the first prelude to the first book of
Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. From this improvisation,
the great pianist Zimmermann, future father-in-law of
Gounod, produced a version for violin accompanied by a
small choir.
It was only later that the arrangement for violin (or
cello) and piano (or harmonium) was made under the
title of "Meditation", intended to be played in
