Fairest Lord Jesus! and Nine Other Hymns of Adoration for Solo Piano

This probably isn’t a word you use too often in everyday speech, but more than likely you use a popular form of it—adorable. Now, usually, adorable is used when talking about some little kid—“That fingerpainting’s adorable!” or “Your 14-month old is adorable!” That sort of thing. The dictionary definition of adoration, though, is deep love and respect! It’s only natural, then, to the Christian, that God should be worthy of our adoration. We should love Him deeply, because He loved us deeply—so deeply that He sent His only Son to die for us when we didn’t even deserve it. We should respect Him, because He is all powerful, and though He has chosen not to exercise His wrath against Christians out of the mercy of His love, His wrath is a terrible thing. Thus, the word adoration seems like it was made to talk about the feeling-emotion-thoughts a Christian should have toward God.
Naturally, many songs have been written that capture this spirit of adoration. When you hear the word, you might think of “Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee God of glory, Lord of love!” This adoration is also well captured in Fairest Lord Jesus!, which spends all its time talking about God’s wondrous attributes except for two clauses “Thee, will I cherish, Thee will I honor” and “Glory and honor, praise, adoration now and forevermore be Thine!” “Hail, Thou Once-Despised Jesus!” emphasizes that Jesus suffered for us, but the whole hymn is a prayer of praise and adoration to Christ for doing just that. “Wonderful, Wonderful Jesus!” reminds us that because of what Christ has done for us, we can sing His praises, even in the toughest of conditions, because Christ helps us in all we go through. The list goes on and on.
I’m sure there are hundreds of adoration hymns out there, but these selections are ten of the ones listed in the “Adoration” category in Great Hymns of the Faith. I hope they prove a blessing to you, and as you play through them, take some time to adore God! There are so many reasons for doing so!
