Brahms composed the Waltzes op. 39 originally for piano
4 hands, 1865. Shortly thereafter he arranged them for
solo piano in two ways: a more advanced (concert)
version and a simplified one. First performance of the
advanced (concert) version by Brahms himself in
Hamburg, 15 November 1868.
First peformance of the 4 hands version by Clara
Schumann and Albert Dietrich in Oldenburg, 23 November
1866.
