A. Ward. Bates' poem was first published in 1895 under
the title "Pikes Peak". She had written the poem whilst
traveling by train after she had held in wonder the
wheat fields of Kansas, and the majestic view of the
Great Plains from Zebulon's Pikes Peak. Samuel A. Ward
had conceived the tune on a ferryboat trip from Coney
Island back to his home in New York City in 1882. He
was so anxious to notate the music that he asked a
fellow passenger for his shirt cuff to write on. The
music and lyrics were only first combined to complete
the song in 1903, and as Ward had died in 1903 he did
not bear witness to his creation's success. Bates
however was more fortunate as the popularity of the
song was well established by the time of her passing in
1929.
