This song should perhaps remain private, because only animal-lovers can truly understand the depth of grief that can be felt at the loss of a canine friend. That said, other composers have written tributes to their pets (including the late, great John Barry), and you may care to study the unique compound time-signature (6+4) and chromatic cadences in this song. Certainly, there is more than basic 3-chord harmony here !

LYRICS
Un-til Rainbow's End!

Good-bye, dear friend, [old faith-ful friend!]
the time draws near, [that time I fear!]
It's jour-ney's end [We've reached the end!],
a trail of grief starts here! [grief starts here!]

It breaks my hea-rt [It numbs my soul],
this just can-not be so [oh, no, no, no!]
I'm torn a-part, how can I start to let you go?

I re-mem-ber you run-ning free;
those seem such happ-y days;
I swear that you smiled at me (you smiled!)
when I laughed at all your ways (Ah ha ah ha!)

[instrumental] It seems just yes-ter-day (I watched you play!)
[instrumental] (You smiled!) How I laughed! (Fond mem-or-ries!)

But I knew that it could-n't last,
be-cause noth-ing is for e-ver;
now just mem-or-ies and pho-to-graphs
bond us to-ge--ther.

I could not be-lieve that you were gone, (I called your name)
or that I could grieve (but I called in vain)
so hard, so deep, so long! (I looked where you'd lain)

Though life goes on, I do not feel whole:
right from the start ('til the ver-y end)
you touched my soul, (you stole my heart)
my dear old faith-ful friend!

Good-bye, dear friend, old friend so true,
un-til Rain-bow's End, a-dieu!
