Georges Bizet (1838 – 1875) was a French composer
best known for his operas. He was a brilliant student
and was accepted to the Conservatoire de Paris at the
age of 9 years. He subsequently won many prizes
including the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1857. An
outstanding pianist he nevertheless chose not to
capitalize on this skill and rarely performed in
public. Bizet's opera Carmen was delayed due to
concerns that the themes of betrayal and murder
contained therein would be offensive to audiences. It
was finally premiered on 3 March 1875.
