The trumpet has the highest register in the brass
family of musical instruments. It is played by blowing
air through closed lips, thus producing a buzzing sound
which results in a vibration within the instrument. The
vibration is known as a standing wave vibration. Since
the late 15th century trumpets have primarily been made
from brass tubing, which is bent twice into a rounded
oblong shape.
Several types of trumpet exist, the most common being
the B♭trumpet which has a tubing length of about
148cm. Modern trumpets have valves which alter the
pitch being played, by increasing the length of tubing.
A musician who plays a trumpet is known as a trumpet
player, or a trumpeter.
Historically trumpets where used as far back as 1500BC.
The Egyptian Pharaoh, Tutankhamun, was buried
accompanied by silver and bronze trumpets in his grave.
