Lohengrin est le sixième opéra que Richard Wagner ait composé. Ecrit entre 1845 et 1848, créé en 1850, cette ?uvre est basée sur l'histoire du « chevalier au cygne », provenant de la littérature médiévale allemande.
Lohengrin connut un succès immédiat et eut une grande importance dans la carrière musicale du compositeur. En effet, pour la première fois, on sent le langage musical de Richard Wagner se libérer définitivement de la tradition classique et montrer pleinement un caractère romantique.
Dans une lettre adressée à Liszt datée de 1853, Richard Wagner dit: «Je m?aperçois que dans Lohengrin, j?ai oublié une indication de mouvement, omission que je n?ai constatée que lorsque je l?ai dirigé. C?est dans le ch?ur nuptial en ré majeur, après le second solo des huit femmes, les huit dernières mesures avant le premier mouvement : ici, le mouvement doit être considérablement ralenti, plus qu?à la première entrée en ré majeur; cela doit se faire tranquillement, solennellement, sinon l?intention est manquée.»
Le ch?ur nuptial dont Richard Wagner fait mention marque le début du troisième acte de l'opéra, lorsqu'Elsa et son époux pénètrent dans la chambre nuptiale où ils se déclarent leur amour : `que les bruits de la fête s'éteignent, que vos c?urs s'enivrent! Que la chambre parfumée parée pour l'amour vous accueille à présent''.
Aujourd'hui, cette marche nuptiale accompagne traditionnellement les mariés à l?entrée ou la sortie de l?Eglise en Occident. Elle est traditionnellement jouée à l?orgue, mais peut être jouée par un orchestre. Elle est parfois appelée ?la marche des fiançailles? Richard Wagner's Polonaise for Piano edited by Arthur D. Walker. Editorial note: This Polonaise and Trio in D major for Piano solo was probably written as an excercise when Wagner was studying under Theodor Weinlig in 1830. Wagner described to Edward Dannreuther much later in his life the teaching methods of Weinlig (Grove I iv 347; Musical Times January 1973 Page 26) The pencil corrections on the autograph part of which is reproduced in the above-mentioned issue of The Musical Times may be in Weinlig's hand. The Polonaise was rejected by Wagner the Trio transformed into a Piano duet and a new Polonaise for Piano duetwas composed.

Concert Paraphrase for Piano-Looking back in 1876 Liszt admitted candidly to the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel that his ?Wagner transcriptions? had ?only served as modest propaganda for Wagner?s noble genius using the meagre possibilities of the piano?. Infact in around 1850 Wagner?s operas Der fliegende Holländer Tannhäuser and Lohengrin which would later be so successful were only being performed at the Weimar Court Theatre under Liszt?s baton. Liszt was inspired tocompose his Tannhäuser Paraphrase by performances in Weimar of the overture in 1848 and of the whole opera in February 1849. Liszt?s piano arrangement of the overture is a technically brilliant piece of the highest order. It is afurther milestone in Henle Publishers? series of Liszt?s Wagner arrangements.
