Composer and violinist János Lavotta (1764-1820), as a member of the ''virtuoso trio'' who played a great role in the history of Hungarian music, was one of the pioneers of verbunkos music. (The other two key players being János Bihari and Antal Csermák.) Although Lavotta s Violin Duos Op. 49 must have also been used for playing music at home, they show the composer's clear educational intent since the fourteen consecutive pieces gradually increase in difficulty in both technical and musical respects. The relatively short and undemanding melodies (which can be grasped by beginners), the sequence-like structure that makes practising individual technical elements possible, therhythmical-harmonic accompanying forms, as well as the temperately applied modulations are definitely suitable for beginner violinists to achieve significant progress in playing. According to music historian Mária Domokos, Lavotta's duos could have been included in the syllabus of any contemporary music school at the time. The first publication of Easy Duos - which came out on the 250th anniversary of the Lavotta's birth - was edited by János Dombóvári who provided the fingering and the necessary instructions for performance.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was paid three guineas for the publishing rights to his Suite de Pièces by Schott & Co. London on 24 December 1892 when the composer was just 17 years old. In the following year the work was published by Schott Music's German office in versions for both violin with piano and violin with organ. Coleridge-Taylor was born in London and brought up in Croydon. He learnt to play the violin, was recognized as a child prodigy and at 15 was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford, where he was a contemporary of Holst and Vaughan Williams. Coleridge-Taylor described himself Anglo-African and, despite support from his colleagues, faced racism throughout his whole career. In spite of this prejudice and his tragically early death in 1912 aged just 37, he enjoyed great success during his lifetime and his music was performed at the Proms no less than 116 times between 1898 and 1939. In contrast, since 1940 his music has only been heard there on eleven occasions. Like many works, at some point in the past Suite de Pièces became out of print. Schott Music is very proud to present this new modern performing edition of the version for violin and piano. Errors and inconsistencies from the first edition have now been corrected.

The six-volume edition of 'Systematische Violintechnik' [Systematic Violin Technique] covers all aspects of violin playing, thus providing the comprehensive groundwork for learning, teaching and performing musicians. The volumes contain a wealth of suggestions of how to edit technically demanding passages in musical masterpieces in a reasonable and perfect way. The simple idea to base the violin technique on the combination of changes of bowing, strings, fingers and position is developed systematically and, like a 'medicine cabinet for violinists', provides a collection of exercises that can be used purposefully. At the same time, 'Systematische Violintechnik' provides a complete and indispensable overview of all technical elements and their connections. An elaborate and field-tested practising material by Prof. Helmut Zehetmair (Mozarteum Salzburg) and Prof. Benjamin Bergmann (Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz).Vol. 5 covers the coordination of two changes each (of bowing, strings, fingers and position).
