Trumpet Sonata

This is a tricky but rewarding Trumpet Sonata by German composer Paul Hindemith. He was a distinguished viola player and an important composer during the first half of the 20th century. With leaps and very deliberate textured melody this is a dramatic and sombre work exemplifying Hindemith?s skill and instrumental sensitivity.The solo trumpet part is also included on a separate insert.

This work which was written shortly after the Trumpet Sonata and the Five Pieces For Piano was first performed by Georgina Dobree and the composer at the 1957 Darmstadt Festival. The score was subsequently lost but wasrediscovered by Kevin Corner in 1983.'This is a dramatic emphatic and at times extravagant piece. The first movement is a Moderato reaching through wide-flung clarinet lines and keen piano gestures to a great climax near theend. Then comes a quick movement a kind of demonic scherzo including a cadenza for the clarinettist. The finale is an Adagio that gradually achieves a sort of simplicity though not before exceedingly testing times for bothplayers.Duration c. 25mins.

Eric Ewazen is a prolific composer whose works are becoming standard repertoire for not only trumpet players but also for brass quintets soloists and wind ensembles alike. Ewazen wrote the Sonata for Trumpet and Piano forthe International Trumpet Guild in 1995. It was premiered by Chris Gekker trumpet soloist in Bloomington Indiana.

Just Brass No. 29-Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was an energetic French composer who is known for both his light-hearted instrumental works and his more serious sacred and choral music. His Sonata For Horn Trumpet AndTrombone (1922) is one of his early mischievous pieces. Relatively short at only 8 minutes anyone can find time to fit this piece into their programme. As part of the indispensable Just Brass collection this edition has been edited by Philip Jones and Elgar Howarth.
