Thes e five brief anthems by Peter Niedmann are intended for practical use during Communion. They set five well-known Communion texts, with two in Latin and three in English. Straightforward in texture and easy to learn, they are nonetheless distinctive and creative in their harmonic language.

Written for the Enchanted Voices CD, this is one of many settings of texts either from the Beatitudes (or springing from them) available from this composer. For Solo and SS divisi, a cappella, the music has a light, ethereal feeling. “Beati” can be taken as a sort of “Blessed are they” prefix for the movements which are not direct quotes from the Beatitudes. This movement is a unison, chant-like setting of the Latin texts for Genesis 20:13 (“Thou shalt do me this kindness…”) and Numbers 11:17 (“And I will take of thy spirit”). The soloist begins and sometimes takes over from the choral voices. Mostly unison except for about ten measures (out of the 69) in two-part texture and four measures in three parts. Duration 4:39

The understated style of Ave verum corpus, set for 3-part treble a cappella, belies its emotional power. The familiar chant melody weaves among the sections, and each repeated “Ave, ave” recalls the object of this Eucharistic hymn. The unmetered notation allows the natural stresses of the Latin to be primary.

Michael Costello has a proven track record with festive arrangements of beloved tunes. This setting of LAUDA ANIMA is no exception. An extended introduction (with instructions for cuts) is followed by four stanzas with short interludes between stanzas 2-3 and 3-4. Verse three (Alleluia cannot always be our song) is set for SATB a cappella voices. The final verse is unison with descant, ending with a fanfare reminiscent of the introduction and a four part Alleluia, Amen! The text is a translation from the Latin by John M. Neale (1861). Can be used as a congregation hymn or as choir anthem.

Gounod's Messe a la memoire de Jeanne d'Arc was composed in 1887 for a festive mass in Reims to commemorate the arrival of the national heroine in the city on the occasion of the coronation of Charles VII in 1429. Performed a cappella or only accompanied by an organ, vast stretches of the work are in an archaic style in the tradition of Palestrina. The royal procession into the cathedral is conveyed in the splendid Prelude at the beginning, which was performed at the premiere by eight trumpets, three trombones, and organ. In the performance material, the present edition also offers a version of the movement for piano and organ. For the Offertoire, Gounod composed a cantilena for violin and organ (or piano), which is also included in the edition, as a Vision of Jeanne d'Arc. After musical training in Naples Niccolo Jommelli began to make his name as an opera composer from the end of the 1730ies onwards. From 1750 until 1753 he was assistant director of music at St. Peter's, Rome, and responsible for the music at the Cappella Giulia - years which were decisive for Jommelli's sacred music. During those years he also composed the three-movement setting of the Whitsun hymn Veni Creator Spiritus for solo soprano, mixed-voice choir, string orchestra and continuo. It is marked by the maturity of the writing for the solo voice, modelled on the example of composers such as Johann Adolf Hasse, and by stylistic hallmarks of Jommelli's music, such as his relatively simple yet highly effective choral writing.
