Le travail Chant du berger par Felix Mendelssohn, présentée comme une réimpression pour la première fois, c'est sa seule composition originale connue pour flûte. Bien que Mendelssohn fréquemment et savamment utilisés des instruments à vent dans ses oeuvres orchestrales, il ne les a jamais fournis avec les pièces importantes, ni dans sa musique de chambre fonctionne pas comme instrument solo, ce qui pourrait avoir été due à des lacunes techniques de l'instrument avant de les inventions révolutionnaires de Theobald Boehm. La composition de courte chanson du berger a été publié pour la première fois après la mort du compositeur en 1889, y compris, en partie pour piano violon d'accompagnement alternatives et complémentaires. L'arrangeur et éditeur était l'organiste et compositeur Tours Berthold (1838-1897). Depuis la littérature ne contient que quelques flûte pièces musicales de grands compositeurs de l'époque romantique, il est surprenant que cette composition, qui avait été imprimé à plus de 100 ans, est restée inconnue pendant une période aussi longue, donc largement restant inconnu du grand public jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
