Composed by Paul Véronge de la Nux, Solo de concours is a piece for Trombone and Piano accompaniment initially written for the the Paris Conservatoire contest. It is ideal to demonstrate the abilities of upper-intermediate players. The beginning by the Piano sounds slightly dramatic but the piece turns out to be really melodious, with a hint of nostalgia. A second part is then introduced, fierceful, stronger and faster with the Trombone Solo. The Piano then joins the Trombone for the last part, quite demanding with a faster rhythm and long phrases. The music sounds more cheerful, and leads to a harmonious end. The piece lasts between five and six minutes. Paul Véronge de la Nux (1853-1911) was a French composer. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and received the Grand Prix de Rome in 1876.

“André Messager (1853-1929) composed Solo de Concours for Clarinet in 1899, as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece. Composed in three sections, the cheerful first part contains triplet figures by the Clarinet that can easily be heard over the Orchestra. The second part has a strong French melody that can be heard as an exchange between the Clarinet and the Orchestra. A cadenza followed by trills ends this section and leads to the final part, where the Clarinet stands out from the Orchestra, with a rich melodic energy. André Messager is a previous student of Gabriel Fauré and Camille Saint-Saëns who wrote numerous operas, operettas and ballets. He was later appointed Commander of the Legion d?Honneur.”.

This album contains fifteen easy compositions for piano solo, inspired by the city: from honking cars, and dark alleys to imposing skyscrapers…one of the pieces is even based on mobile phone ringtones. The album is aimed at students who have beenplaying the piano for three to four years; the level of difficulty varies for each piece some are slightly easier, or trickier, than the others. Each work has its own specific mood and style, and where possible I have also tried to incorporatevarious techniques or characters within one composition. This music would make a suitable competition selection, as well as appropriate concert or exam pieces.

Duri ng the time the arranger studied bassoon in college, he always got the impression that the Premier Solo by Eugene Bourdeau was one of those minor pieces, meant to be played early on as a student before being able or allowed to play the real repertoire. Originally composed for the Concours of the Paris Conservatory, there really is a lot going on in such a relatively short piece and the piece transposes remarkably well for the bass clarinet! Included are a part for a standard-range instrument (to low E-flat), and for an extended range instrument (to low C), with the latter being identical to the original bassoon part. From the edition for bass clarinet and piano, this arrangement has been created for solo bass clarinet and clarinet choir, although it is perfectly suitable for a bassoon to be the soloist as well.

French oboist, organist, teacher and composer, Charles Colin (1832-1881) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won many prizes. Colin then went on to lead a successful musical career and his wealth of experience led to the composition of Famous Solos for Competitions, which remain highly regarded to this day. Significantly, the entire compilation of Famous Solos for Competitions was performed 1983 by oboe students at the University of Washington. The first solo, Colin's Opus 33 is challenging for the advanced oboist. The work addresses many technicalities, including complex rhythms, a range of articulation, variations in performance directions, dynamics and time signatures, ornamentation and wide range, among other aspects. For all aspiring, advanced oboe players, Colin's Famous Solos for Competitions is an essential addition to the repertoire, providing excellent audition and competition pieces.

Euge ne Bourdeau came from a family of bassoonists and eventually became the professor of bassoon at the Paris Conservatory from 1891 to 1922. Though not well-known as a composer, he composed three solos for bassoon, consisting of a a variety of styles. The Deuxieme (Second) Solo, composed for the 1907 concours of the Paris Conservatory, is in three sections: a stately introduction, a slow middle section, and a brisk allegretto. Originally in the key of B minor/D major, the entire piece has been transposed up one half-step, to better accommodate the range of the bass clarinet, as well as to make it a more comfortable key.
