Classical Guitar Solos - Favorite Sonatinas. In this book, guitarist and music historian David Grimes presents 20 ?small sonatas? or sonatinas, complete with detailed performance notes and bio sketches of each of the contributing composers: Leonhard von Call, Matteo Carcassi, Ferdinando Carulli, Mauro Giuliani, Francesco Molino, and Antonio Nava. While flexible, the early 19th-century sonatina form usually consists of 2 - 4 contrasting movements, here in guitar-friendly keys, making these pieces ideal for performance by intermediate-level students. In all but the most challenging passages, Grimes has intentionally kept fingering to a minimum to allow students to form their own concept of this critical skill. The Opus 210 by Louis Kohler is a delightful collection of 32 pieces ranging from very easy to medium-difficult. Kohler like many of his contemporaries Robert Schumann Peter Tchaikowsky and later Claude Debussy wrotecollections of character pieces for beginning students to play. The pieces in this collection are lighthearted in spirit with simple harmonic progressions and straight- forward rhythms. They can be categorized as characterpieces (short pieces with programmatic titles) which are typical of the Romantic period. Not only do the pieces provide opportunities to stimulate creativity and imagination within each individual player they also provideexcellent oportunities to build technique musicality and rhythmic skills from the very beginning. Kohler proves that one can build technical skills and musicianship skills while at the same time enjoying the music. Thepieces are not overly difficult or lengthy which adds to their charm.

Rosita a Polka and Marieta a Mazurka are presented here as a pair of short but challenging pieces for the solo classical guitar. Castellon-born composer Francisco Terrega was a highly important figure in the revival of the guitar as a solo instrument at the start of the 20th century and these two dances form part of nearly 100 original works for the instrument.
