The first, scored for organ and trumpet in B-flat, explores the wide range of sonorities of the organ, in alternation with a well-constructed trumpet part of moderate difficulty. The second piece is written for organ and brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba). Mr. Shenk expertly scores the brass instruments in a variety of textures, from solo, through duet, trio, quartet to the full ensemble. The repertoire of solemn processional music benefits from Calvert Shenk's superb compositional technique.
