These Eight Viola Duos were written in November 1985 for the married couple, Emanuel ("Manny") and Lenore Vardi (Weinstock). Emanuel Vardi (*1917) was one of the great masters of his instrument for half a century. He was Principal viola of the NBC Symphony Orchestra with Arturo Toscanini. His musical versatility made it possible for him to play on recordings with jazzmen like Quincy Jones and Louis Armstrong.
Violinist Lenore Vardi is also a versatile musician who displays her musical abilities and versatility equally well as a violist.
The originality of these eight pieces clearly demonstrates Richard Lane’s fascination with the rich and emotional sounds produced by this alto clef instrument, and the underlying musical value and stylistic diversity of the music make these duos excellent teaching material.
