This familiar tune was composed (perhaps by the early French composer Jean-Baptiste Lully) as a march in honor of France's celebrated military hero, Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne. The tune is known by several titles. When used with lyrics about the Magi and the celebration of Epiphany, it is called The March of the Kings. Georges Bizet included the melody in a suite of incidental music for a play by Daudet. This version is often used by bands and orchestras in a theme and variations format known as Farandole. A third violin part has been included.
