Program Notes

Nimrod, the ninth variation in Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, is dedicated to the composer's friend Augustus J. Jaeger, to whom the work is inscribed. The variations were composed between October 1898 and February 1899, and published in 1901.  Nimrod is regarded as one of the most famous of the variations, and is known for its elegantly simple harmonies and memorable melody. Its expressive poignancy has led to its frequent use at state occasions and memorials.  Nimrod has a warm, slow-moving harmonies, with Elgar using counterpoint to evoke a reflective nostalgia. The piece begins with a somber string introduction that sets up the main theme, which is first introduced by the strings and then echoed by the woodwinds. The main emotional climax of the piece occurs on the second statement of the theme. The variation ends quietly, bringing the melodic phrase to a resolution.  In addition to its cultural significance, many have connected this piece to Elgar's own feelings of loss and prolonged melancholy during this time period. It is said that this piece reflects the nostalgia and sadness of a person who deeply misses someone they are no longer able to see, and it is certainly possible to interpret Nimrod in this way.  Overall, Nimrod is a masterful work of great emotional depth and beauty, and a timeless classic. A cornerstone of the Romantic repertoire, it continues to move and inspire listeners with its emotional intensity and hauntingly beautiful melody.
