Carmen is an opera in four acts by French composer Georges Bizet, with libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, based on Prosper Mérimée's novel of the same name. It premiered in 1875 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The transgressive character of the protagonist provoked severe criticism at the opera's premiere in March 1875. Popular acclaim did not come until October of that year, when it was staged in Vienna to the applause of Brahms, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, and Nietzsche. However, Bizet, who had died in June, was unable to see the success of his work, which would make a triumphant return to the stages of Paris in 1883.
