Rachmaninoff had stopped attending church, but he felt compelled to write some of his own chants in the style of the Church, calling them "conscious counterfeits".
The work is enormous, of over one hour of the most beautiful choral writing with Rachmaninoff's patented rich harmonies, melody and polyphony.
