Composed by Claude Debussy (1862-1918). Arranged by James Pybus. 20th Century,Contest,Festival. 11 pages. James Pybus #35415. Published by James Pybus (A0.764651).

Pour le piano (For the piano), L.95, is a three-movement suite for solo piano by Claude Debussy. The composition was finished and issued in 1901. Its premiere took place on 11 January 1902 in the Salle Érard for the Société Nationale de Musique, with Ricardo Viñes as the pianist. Sarabande, the second movement, dates from the winter of 1894; it originally belonged to the series of Images oubliées, underlined by the fact that both works were dedicated to Yvonne Lerolle. This movement was later orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. My first encounter with this evocative music was in my university days while taking an orchestration class. My professor, Dr. Kenneth Bray, had assigned us a project to arrange a piano piece of our own choosing for string orchestra. I chose Debussy’s Sarabande because I thought it was well suited for the medium. I was fortunate to have my arrangement performed by a local community orchestra. Since that time the piece has always remained in the back of my mind until recently when I came across a flute quartet arrangement by Himie Voxman. I decided to return to Debussy’s original score and in 2015 I wrote the present arrangement for saxophones. The key has been changed to a more saxophone-friendly key, but everything else is as Debussy conceived it. I hope you enjoy performing this atmospheric music.
