He was the leading Italian composer and organist in Venice at its greatest heights at the chasm between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period in music. One of the most popular of his smaller instrument works are the 4 Canzonas. Presented here is the first of them written around 1608. It is unique in that it is the only Canzona of those 4 that are in a minor key. Called ‘La Spiritata’ meaning "the spirited", it takes its themes from French chansons that were quite popular in Venice at that time. Loaded with complex driving rhythms it is a most interesting work that enthralls audiences with its high spirits.
