But they are not a lot of fun....if you do them wrong, that is. Here is a review of this book by Diane Boyd Schultz (University of Alabama) in the July/August 2014 edition of Flute Talk magazine: This set of studies for all treble clef instruments is a repository of 38 scale types, both Western and non-Western, presented by John Gibson in an easy-to-read spiral-bound volume. The first part takes all 38 scales through a pattern that omits certain notes in each group of four and also includes rhythmic distortions to add interest and complexity. The second part puts each of the 38 scales into thirds patterns, an often-overlooked configuration, while the third section takes popular folk songs and etudes and changes them according to the scale pattern. The final section features three advanced etudes that utilize several of the less common scales. A sampling of the scales includes Dorian, Chromatic Hypodorian, Phrygian Flat 4th, Chromatic Hypophrygian Inverse, Lydian Augmented, Ultra Locrian, Blues, Oriental, Hungarian minor, and several derived from Karnatic modes. By mastering the basic as well as more unusual scales, performers will more quickly master many musical offerings of the 20th and 21st centuries.
