Product Description
Product Description
In a bold Fender first, the tone master deluxe reverb amplifier uses massive digital processing power to achieve a single remarkable sonic feat: faithfully modeling the circuitry and 22-Watt power output of an original deluxe tube amp. Using a high-performance 100-watt digital power amp to achieve the headroom and dynamic range of a real vintage deluxe tube amp, paired with the pronounced sparkle and clarity of a single Jensen n-12k neodymium speaker and a resonant Pine cabinet, The result is tubeless deluxe reverb tone, volume and dynamics virtually indistinguishable from the all-tube original. And with all these features, the tone master deluxe reverb is in fact about only half the weight of an all-tube deluxe. Front panel features give guitarists a playing experience identical to the tube version, including Fender world-standard reverb and tremolo effects. Additional rear-panel features deliver modern convenience and flexibility—including an output power selector for full power and five attenuated settings, balanced XLR line output with impulse response (IR) cabinet simulations, mute switch for silent stage or recording use, USB port for firmware upgrades, and more.

While I have not compared it side-by-side to the comparable tube amp, I have heard the tube version hundreds of times and believe it has the same transparency and sparkle. No one should buy this amp thinking it’s exactly the same as the tube version. Buy it because it’s great classic Fender sound, easy to carry, and you don’t expect to use it without at least basic effect pedals (Jimi only used two at Woodstock.) Before buying, I read the manuals for the Tonemaster and traditional tube versions on the Fender site. For the tube version, Fender wants you take the amp to an authorized repair center for tube replacement. Enough said.
One, tiny note of caution. Assuming you connect to the amp by cable (instead of wirelessly), getting the cable wrapped around a mic stand or otherwise caught could pull this lightweight beauty over. Impossible to do with my old Vox Super Beatle.
Outstanding service by Amazon. The amp arrived ahead of schedule, perfectly packaged, without even a ding on the box.
For me, the Fender Tone Master Deluxe Reverb amp is hitting on all cylinders: very closely capturing the classic tone of the original all-tube Deluxe Reverb amps; unbelievable light weight; optional "mic'd" cabinet simulations for line-out feed; powerful speaker output when needed; ability to attenuate the speaker output to much lower sound levels for at-home use, while still "overdriving" the sound circuit (volume set above "5"). It's this last feature that I find most useful. I no longer have to play at a low volume with diminished amp performance. Richness of tone - including bass - is prevalent even at the .2 watt setting. At least to my ears with my guitar (1980s American Standard Stratocaster, single coils).
And all of this at a price that - again subjectively - is reasonable.
It's obvious that Fender put a lot of effort into the entire development of this amp. And it exceeded my expectations, even after all of the hype.
Meanwhile, this amp offers 3 main advantages over its tube sibling:
(1) Light weight. Makes it easy to transport to gigs.
(2) Less fragile. Drop a tube amp and you're in trouble. This one has no glass tubes and no reverb tank. So much less to worry about.
(3) Most important: Great "attenuation" options by lowering the power settings. You can get a "cranked" Deluxe sound at workable volumes by dialing back the wattage in back of the amp. Or you can go XLR out into a mixing board. Sound engineers will love you.
XLR output comes with a microphone emulator. Position 1 emulates an SM57 and Position 2 emulates a Royer R121. The differences are subtle to my ear, but a cool feature nonetheless.
Great amp that represents the best of today's digital audio technology. It's a bit cheaper than a tube Deluxe, but honestly, I think it's also a better overall amp. Listen for yourself and you'll see what I mean!
I sold a DRRI and a Custom Vibrolux (black face) to get these and I'm not sorry. These are the future of higher end amps that do one thing and do it very well; it's possible a Kemper Profiling Amp can match these, but it costs more (substantially) than either of these.
Highly recommend you try them out.
Update: OK: New experiment with the ToneMaster Twin: I plugged in my Martin HD28VR acoustic with LR Baggs M-1 Active pickup; everything on 5, except reverb (on 2, no tremolo...), set to 12 watts: WOW: totally natural sounding acoustic guitar amp. On a Tube Twin, you could not do this without uncontrollable feedback due to volume, or you have to set the volume so low the you don't get any "push" that makes the amp come alive. Bass not boomy; treble not ice-picks. Sounded like the acoustic that it is, just louder. I'm impressed. The Tonemaster Deluxe is at the studio now, buy I'll try that in a few days.

Behaves exactly as I'd expect a Deluxe Reverb Reissue to behave, except at more reasonable sounds levels when attenuated. Having said that, this thing can get very loud if you want to turn it up. It's a really nice piece of kit.
