This practice mute is definitely worth buying because it does not affect the pitch at all, it just mutes it. You might hear a change when using the mute in a bigger boar horn. It may be sharp depending on the size of the bell. O recently found out that it work on a French horn. It is a very effective and cost friendly way to practice when and where ever you want. I would recommend this item hands down.

I live in an apartment with adjacent units on 2 sides and another upstairs, and the walls are thin enough that I hear a baby crying from one neighbor and a dog barking from another. So when I wanted to get back to playing my instruments again I knew I had to research practice mutes that wouldn't bring noise complaints down on me. I started with the trumpet and my mother, who is a music teacher and has been playing the trumpet for over 40 years, sent me a Humes & Berg Stonelined Sh! Sh! Practice Mute. A practice mute comparisson that I found gave it high ratings for noise reduction but a low rating for the back pressure, but the mutes that rated high in both categories were in the $40 to $60 range. When I play my trumpet I'm pretty confident that my neighbors can't hear me, but the back pressure wears me out in less than 1/2 the time of playing without a mute, which is supposed to be good for building endurance but isn't as enjoyable as playing cleanly.

When I wanted to start practicing my trombone again, I didn't even look around at other mutes. This trombone mute is just as quiet as my trumpet mute, but again the back pressure is impossible to miss. My trombone is a King Tenor trombone, and the mute fits securely in the bell. I can play as much as I want without worrying about disturbing my neighbors, but while I can hear if I'm hitting the right notes I can't hear my tone. If you're trying to be quiet, this is a great mute, but if you want quiet and a natural playing experience you'll need to look at higher priced mutes.

I am an intermediate/pro-ish trombonist, and I've been playing for about 6-7 years, and I absolutely love this product and here's why.

Pros:

1. Really quiet when warming up and practicing.

2. You can still hear yourself play as normal. (but others can't!)

3. Don't disturb others when living with family.

4. Fits any Trombone

5. Helps improve volume.

6. PORTABLE!

Cons:

1.If dropped a couple times it may break.

2. Not in conditions for beginners. (Fragile)

i have an exceptionally light horn for what it is(conn 88ht) and the weight of the mute isn't that much but it's big enough to throw off the balance.

At age 69 I decided to learn to play the trombone. There can be few things as disruptively obnoxious as listening to someone try to master the scales on a very loud and very tricky instrument (both the quality and the pitch of the notes are quite variable and difficult for beginners.) My wife of some four decades was patient, but she is not a saint and she is an accomplished choral alto. Practicing when she was out of the house was irregular and didn't help with relations with the neighbors, in any case. This product really reduced the sound to negligible. There is some additional back-pressure, but I don't think that will impede my progress, such as it is. Wish me luck!!

Provided decent resistance but very successfully muted the sound as well as kept the pitch fairly accurate. Good for apartment players.

It plays pretty well. I can use it in both my King 3B tenor trombone and Besson Bass trombone. Yes there is back pressure. Does it effect playing, not really. I wanted to get a practice mute for at home, but didn't plan on using it that much. I've used several other H&B products with pretty good success over the years so I though to give this one a try. It is what I expected.

I live in a condo and have not wanted to bother my neighbors while I practiced. The mute has been the solution. I have to admit I didn't expect it to change the amount of air I have to push as much as it does, but I get to practice again, it sounds pretty decent, and I get a good workout as well.
