One thing I will avoid is restringing one of my mandolins! Finally I buckled and was looking for a loop end, medium-light set. The D'Addarios fit this bill. The Phosphor-Bronze are just right between brightnesss and depth of tone across the strings, easy on the violin player's fingers, and sound great on my Phoenix mandolin. Will have to try them on some others. The Phoenix is a great hand-made (at one time) nearly violin-like superbly crafted mandolin by Rolfe Gerhardt. It is a good test of tonal qualities of any strings.

My rating is 5 stars. The strings were as advertised, and delivered promptly. That said, I installed them on a custom built mandolin, on which I had been using mediums for years. Someone insisted I try medium/heavy, assuring the volume and tone would improve. That turned out not to be the case. Before installing, I checked the data on the added pressure load from the heavier string weight, and decided it would not make a major difference. In fact, it made a huge difference. The added pressure on the sound board caused the "E" string notes in the higher register to become muted or less than clear. After three or four bridge height adjustments (which helped, but raised the action to unacceptable levels), I was about to adjust the truss rod. Then fate intervened. One of the strings snapped. I considered it to be a sign from above. I removed the strings, and replaced with mediums. Instrument immediately returned to normal (after again adjusting the bridge to restore to the original sweet spot). Never again. Perhaps I'll try lights next time. Not!
