Ralph Vaughan Williams's Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra was composed in 1953-4 to mark the 50th anniversary of the formation of the LSO and was written for the orchestra's principal tuba player Philip Catelinet. It was the first major concerto to be written for the instrument and remains today the outstanding work of its kind. This new edition is based on all extant sources and contains full textual notes and a discussion of the editorial method. Notable additions are the inclusion of two sets of phrasing for the Romanza-one from the first publication largely influenced by Catelinet and the other from Vaughan Williams's manuscript-and the originalcadenza to the first movement. The arrangement for tuba and piano has been updated in light of the research carried out by David Matthews and all orchestral parts have been revised.

Marking the first publication of an early work for chamber orchestra this study score presents Ralph Vaughan Williams's The Solent composed in 1903. The main theme from this work will be recognisable to many listeners as it later found its way into both the Sea Symphony and the Ninth Symphony albeit in a somewhat altered form. This duplication has intrigued many Vaughan Williams' scholars as has the Philip Marston quotation that prefaces the scores: 'Passion and sorrow in the deep sea's voice A mighty mystery saddening all the wind?'.The score has been edited by James Francis Brown and includes an introduction by theeditor.

Collected (and set with a Piano accompaniment) by Ralph Vaughan Williams from the collection Folk Songs from the Eastern Counties. For solo voice with Piano accompaniment.First sung to R. Vaughan Williams by James 'Duggie' Carter a King's Lynn fisherman the song tells the story of the death of a young boy aboard a ship. According to comments from RVW himself 'The ballad was probably called forth by a particularly brutal case of ill treatment similiar to that narrated in it which occurred some twenty or thirty years ago'.Lyrics:One day a poor boy to me was bound apprentice Because of his beingfatherless;I took him out of St.Jamesâ workhouse His mother being in deep distress. One day this poor boy unto me offended But nothing to him I did say Up to the mainmast shroud I sent him And there I kept him all that long day.All with my gasket I misused him So shamefully I canât deny And by my barbarous cruel entreatment The very next day this poor boy died. You captains all throughout the nation Hear a voice and a warning take by me;Take special care of your apprenticeWhile you are on the raging sea.

20th century English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams is perhaps best known for his symphonies and large-scale choral works however the essence of his music can also be found in his songs. His 1903 House of Life cyclefeatures 6 songs out of which the most famous one is the second Silent Noon. Composed before the rest of the cycle and first published separately this piece in E-flat major for Voice and Piano can easilystand alone. By using the sonnet of renowned 19th century English painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti Williams celebrates the beauty of the English language and advances toward the true 20th century Englishart song. All of the songs in House of Life are written for sonnets from Rossetti?s sonnet-sequence of the same name and thus the continuity of the cycle is enforced both by the music and the lyrics. At the same time thesimilarity given by the strict rules of the Petrarchan sonnet-form emphasises the differences in mood meaning and music between the six songs. Even though the (male) narrator in Silent Noon is optimistic andhopeful some of the variations in the passages suggest the despairing of love in Song 6 (?Love?s Last Gift?) which gives this piece an interesting lyrical atmosphere.

Par VAUGHAN WILLIAMS RALPH. Vaughan Williams arrived in Paris in 12th December 1907 so that he could have lessons with Maurice Ravel. This is the first of his works to demonstrate the effects of these lessons which, as he wrote to Michael Calvocoressi after his return to London, 'helped me and taught me more than I imagined was possible'. Although works written not long after his Paris sojourn show signs of what he has learnt in Paris, Whisper of Heavenly Death seems to be the only surviving work that was actually started and completed while he was still having the lessons and was therefore probably written at Ravel's instigation. This is rather borne out by the piece's chromatic style and dark orchestral colouring.
The work is now published for the first time under the auspices of The Vaughan Williams Charitable Trust./ Répertoire / Baryton et Orchestre

Par VAUGHAN WILLIAMS RALPH. In his Prelude ? The Truth from Above, outstanding arranger and curator Paul Hindmarsh has distilled the essence of a timeless Christmas classic by Ralph Vaughan Williams into five minutes of ravishingly unforgettable music for brass band. The variants of the Herefordshire tune popular from the Fantasia on Christmas Carols and The Oxford Book of Carols are skilfully and stylishly woven together, from an evocative opening to an ecstatic, multi-layered coda. Unerringly true to the timeless spirit of the original, with the added beauty of the brass-band sound at its most sonorously grave and haunting, Prelude ? The Truth from Above may be performed separately, or as the first of two preludes, preceding Paul?s arrangement of Rhosymedre from the Three Preludes Founded on Welsh Hymn Tunes, also available from Stainer and Bell. / Date parution : 2021-11-03/ Répertoire / Brass Band

Vaughan Williams began this work - his earliest known piece for a solo instrument with orchestra - in 1896 shortly after returning to the Royal College of Music to study composition with Stanford and completed it in 1904. After his death the manuscript was donated to the British Library and it was here that the pianist Mark Bebbington rediscovered it in 2010 subsequently recording it for Somm Records. The work shows influences of late nineteenth-century composers but also hallmarks of Vaughan Williams's later style and maturity. As such it offers a fascinating glimpse into the composer's development as well as being a powerful work in its own right. This isits first publication; a study score of the orchestral version is also available on sale. Orchestral material is available on hire/rental.
