Lowel l Liebermann's 4th String Quartet was commissioned by the Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival and the Wood Library, Canandaigua, NY, for the Orion Quartet in celebration of their 20th Anniversary. The quartet was premiered by the Orions at the Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival in Rochester, NY on February 9th, 2008. To quote the writer Mark Greenberg: It's a remarkable piece. The mood is elegiacal and meditative, the melodic lines sinuous and searching, the harmonies rich and astonishingly beautiful. Liebermann works within the traditions of Western tonality, but that is a mansion with many rooms. Liebermann inhabits all of them as his expressive purposes require, and he doesn't mind knocking down a wall to create new harmonic spaces. The Fourth Quartet doesn't exactly fit the neoromantic niche into which Liebermann is sometimes placed. Much of the music, especially near the beginning, is a highly advanced and fluid chromatic expressionism with modernist tendencies. Sometimes this roiling cloudscape breaks open to allow a patch of near-classical harmony and almost-resolution. Near the midpoint the clouds lift in leaping modulations. Several chordal passages recall Russian Orthodox chant. Suddenly, when you've begun to think the somber, deliberate pace has gone on a bit too long, Liebermann introduces a kind of hobbled, stilted jazz idiom. The piece dies in pensive quiet.

The title is a combination of the terms saxophone and collage, which already gives a hint to the essential design of the piece: Several different compositional aspects such as sound layers, melodic sections, aleatoric elements and, last but not least, jazz-like moments are placed in always different relations with each other, collaged as it were. This original composition is a valuable addition to the repertoire for the classical and modern instrumentation of the saxophone quartet.

Die uberraschenden und verbluffenden Ergebnisse, die den gangigen Vermutungen z.T. krass wiedersprechen, werden ausfuhrlich dargestellt und hin und wieder unkonventionell prasentiert. eine unvoreingenommene theoretische Erorterung der Daten zeigt selbst dort recht klare Interpretationsmoglichkei ten auf, wo bislang eher Vorurteile und Ratlosigkeit die Diskussion bestimmen.

The composer was inspired to write these pieces by the Corridor Quartet (Gyorgy Lakatos, Mihaly Duffek, Zsofia Stefan, and Sara Rebeka Toth), with their open attitude to music and their enchanting sound world. The timbres of the bassoon harmony are emphasised still more by being joined by the double bass, and by a voice or flute soaring above them. And because of the sound of the bassoons, it's spiced with a kindof fantasy mood, a kind of ''Lord of the Rings'' feel.'(jazzma.hu, Karoly Gaspar) The name of the Corridor Quartet refers to a corridor that leads the listeners between different centuries, styles, and genres. It joins things together, and acts as a bridge, many doors opening off from it: classical, modern and folk, jazz and rock. Tibor Csuhaj-Barna is a jazz double bass player and composer, and an associate professor (DLA) at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music.Over the last 30 years he has been an active performer on the Hungarian jazz scene, compiling and playing on many CDs. He has written music for theatres, choirs, and jazz lineups ranging from duos to big band.
