Saggi di Giacomo Albert, Nicola Bernardini, Remy Campos, Michael Dias, Mylene Gioffredo, Jonathan Goldman, Robert Hasegawa, Joel V. Hunt, Anna Stoll Knecht, Benjamin M. Korstvedt, Federico Lazzaro, Alessandra Carlotta Pellegrini, Camille Rondeau, Friedemann SallisA growing number of music scholars have lately shifted their attention from musical works to the creative processes that produced them. The study of these processes serves as a springboard for interdisciplinary research that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of musical philology. These recent orientations adopt a heuristic approach to musical craft in the composer's workshop and build on the rich heritage of sketch studies, while incorporating psychological, anthropological, sociological, historical and analytical methods. The study of the creative process in music also seeks to adapt the apparatus of literary critique genetique. Scholars of creative process also regularly turn their attention to artistic situations in which sketches and scores may not be available as loci of investigation and seek to adapt the tools of creativity studies to research not only on composers, but also performers, improvisers, and even artistic directors, recording engineers, radio producers, commissioners or any other actor in the musical field.Texts and Beyond offers new orientations in the study of the creative process in music. The essays included here show a particular interest in unfinished works and in the logic of their completion, as well as in the creative interaction of music coupled with other arts. In twelve chapters and an Afterword, this volume explores a wide variety of topics, including compositions by Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, Charles Koechlin, Giacinto Scelsi, Henry Brant, Luciano Berio, Brian Ferneyhough, Jacques Hetu and Jose Evangelista, as well as extending to the realm of ballet staging, composing for the cinema and video art.

Solemn, spherical, downright uplifting - these attributes apply in a special way to Rolf Rudin's Würzburg hallelujah. The polyphoniccoda composition for the hallelujah song GL 175.4 by Heinrich Rohr was created in 2006 as a commissioned composition for the girls' choir at Würzburg Cathedral. The prefixed unanimous intonation of Rohrsche Halleluja is followed by the award-winning composer's four- to five-part female choir (SSSAA). The praise of God finds its solemn conclusion with enchanting “otherworldly” sounds. A church music miniature with a gooseflesh character, which is suitable for liturgical use as well as being detached from the liturgical context.

Miguel Llobet's famous Catalan plucked string orchestra called the 'Lira Orfeo' was active in Barcelona from 1899-1906. Here we present a new engraving of all the surviving original scores, set in the same performing score format in which they were originally used 120 years ago. The Lira Orfeo quickly became an important part of Barcelona's cultural scene; with Tárrega as its honorary president the Lira Orfeo society was founded in 1898 and an official inaugural concert, shared between Manuel Burgés (pno) and Miguel Llobet (gtr) took place in Barcelona in 1898. The aim of the society was to offer a full musical education, both theoretical and instrumental, for guitarists and players of other plucked instrument family, with eventually with a place in its Catalan plucked instrument orchestra of the same name. The teachers for guitar were Miguel Llobet, Pedro Lloret and Domingo Prat. Prominent musicians such as Manuel Burgés and Baldomera Cateura were also on the teaching staff. Classes were given three times a week, and as the players were mainly amateurs with day jobs, these took place in the evening and often went on until 2 o'clock in the morning. The debut of the orchestra took place in 1903 and it gave regular concerts at top venues right up to the society's dissolution in 1907, mainly due to lack of funding. For the instruments used see the list of works below. The repertoire is varied, selected, arranged by Miguel Llobet it was mainly drawn from traditional and impressionist Iberian music, as well as the German classics, it includes a specially commissioned work Triomphe d'Orphée' by the famous Catalán pianist Manuel Burgés. We at Guitar Heritage are proud to present the first publication of this huge cultural contribution to music in its original form and prepared from the source manuscripts which were the work of Miguel Llobet. The edition has many illustrations, rare documents and photographs as well as a comprehensive critical commentary by Stefano Grondona - whose knowledge of Miguel Llobet, as well as of Catalonian culture, has made an edition of this scope possible. These arrangements are superb and presented as they originally were in the same score form. The now relatively rare instruments called for can be replaced by suitable alternatives - this is ideal and interesting material for adapting to guitar orchestra/ensemble or mandolin orchestra, or similar.

During the intensive study of Johann Sebastian Bach's Musical Offering for the creation of a commissioned composition for wind trio, I had the idea of writing a larger organ work on the Royal Theme at the same time. This is how the Three Ricercare came into being. They are multi-part fantasies for organ, which - connected by the frequently transformed thematic material of the Musical Offering and the manifoldly reshaped B-A-C-H motif - alternate between free, rapsodic parts on the one hand and strictly structured parts on the other. For my 60th birthday, W. E. v. Lewinski wrote an appreciation under the title: Music in the span between constraint and freedom. This formulation aptly characterizes the new organ work. The Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) is committed to cultivating Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in the international guitar community and in the repertoire published for the instrument. Many factors, including a composer's race, gender, and sexual orientation, have historically created a narrow representation of our community in the classical music canon. For this first volume of the GFA Spotlight Series, the GFA commissioned seven new works by composers of color. The second volume of this series will follow with seven transcriptions of existing pieces by composers of color. These commissioned pieces and transcriptions were premiered by students in the GFA Mentorship Program in 2021.With this collection, the guitar takes a step towards a more inclusive and representative repertoire that nurtures creativity and inclusion for generations of guitarists to come. Growing the canon enriches the musical experiences of our entire international guitar community through exposure to diverse perspectives and voices, complementing the invaluable lessons we learn from the existing contributions of pieces that form the canon.

Frontier Vision is a concert or contest piece based on three elements: the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Reformation Day, the Martin Luther melody, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (Ein Feste Burg ist unser Gott) on whichthis composition is based, and thirdly the spreading of the evangelical movement in the late 19th century, of which the analogous storyline forms the structural basis of this work. Multi-cultural ethnic influences, along with the driving rhythms thatreflect the perseverance and hard work of those mission-minded pioneers, are both important components that make Frontier Vision an outstanding choice for your concert or contest. Frontier Vision was the test piece for the seconddivision in the Dutch National Brass Band Championships 2017.Frontier Vision is een concert- of wedstrijdwerk ter gelegenheid van de 500ste hervormingsdag. As part of a collaboration between students and composer, Sean O'Loughlin, Dark Dreams is a dark and mysterious piece that utilizes techniques such as tremolo and pizzicato. Following a slow and mysterious opening which illustrates the tapestry of sound for the composition, the work develops the musical material into various vivid, intense, and gripping musical moments.
Dark Dreams was commissioned by the Westport, Connecticut Public Schools for the Bedford Middle School 7th Grade Orchestra, Michele Anderson, director. It is a piece influenced by many ideas from the students including such descriptive words as dark, mysterious, vivid, intense and gripping. The collaboration process on commissions like this are very rewarding for both the students and composer.
The students were looking to include techniques like tremolo and pizzicato, so the opening includes both of these to set the tapestry of sound for the composition. The slow and mysterious opening gives way to an intense fast section at m. 19. Trading off between upper and lower strings adds to the tension before the upper strings take hold of the melody at m. 31. This melody is derived from the slow opening material. The lower strings get their chance on the melody at m. 47 in an augmented form. This builds to a dramatic slow section at m. 57. The opening material returns at m. 66 to transition back to the fast material. Make sure to play the silence at m. 88 for maximum effect and really lean into the final note even though it is on beat 3 of the measure.

Much like a film score, Peter Kleine Schaars’ composition paints colourful images while telling the story of the Anglo-Saxon monk, Lebu nus. In around 768 AD, Lebu nus founded a mission in the Dutch province of Deventer in an effort to convert the Pagan Saxons. Contrasting themes describe the Ijssel Valley, the Saxons and Lebu nus, construction on the church and its subsequent destruction in a clash with the Saxons. The Ijssel-Valley-theme returns one more time in a minor key before each of the themes come together again for one rousing finale. Let battle commence!
