This work presents the listener with the wondrous grandeur of one of the great mountain ranges in America, the Sierra Nevada. When the music begins, the listener is greeted with the awakening of an early morning in the Sierras, complete with a mysterious, foggy mist that creates a feeling of complete stillness and peace with the world. As the mist slowly dissipates, hidden forms begin to make their presence known and gradually become a tremendous panorama of grand snow-covered mountain peaks. Grandiose and immense in all their beauty and glory, they stand before you with a sense of undeniable power, extending in all directions as far as the eye can see. Upon closer inspection one can imagine the circling golden eagles, the regal elk and royal stags, all lazily wandering the hills and canyons of conifers that stand tall, reaching for the passing clouds in hopes of gaining a few rays of life-giving sunshine and moisture. Look in another direction and you will see the immense rolling hillsides of colourful wild flowers, fluttering butterflies, birds darting about, sparkling waterfalls and all critters existing in harmony. After the day's activities the sun begins to slip below the horizon, the mist returns, and all living things prepare for another still night of sleep, serenity and the warmth of their secure bedding places.

Commissi oned by the Ensemble Intercontemporain In 1989 I first discovered the writings of Anne-Marie Albiach. H II lineaires especially impressed me, on the one hand through the sensual presence of the words, and on the other hand, above all, through the spatial disposition of the typography. This is a form of writing which has nothing to do with all that has existed before it. This impression was the starting point for a creative work which has since become a kind of a project to which I will dedicate myself throughout my life. Since that time of my first discovery (in which hundreds of pages of sketches and a published excerpt of a score of a syntagma have been composed, namely << monstrueuse vecut dans le cadre >> la memoire) I have attempted to develop a new musical system that encompasses all the parameters of composition. All of these works which I have composed are independent from this enormous project, but at the same time they form the experimental laboratory for the all-encompassing musical system towards which I am working and developing: a new system of determining pitches, metre, dynamics, musical diction, manner of performance, etc. With << monstrueuse vecut dans le cadre >> la memoire it appears that the research for this project has been concluded. After the two large cycles << Les Georgiques >> on texts from Claude Simon and << Tristram Shandy >> from Laurence Sterne, both employing techniques from my work with Albiach's texts, I could finally compose this work, which was originally conceived for voice and 6 instrumental groups - the system was mastered, so to speak. Anne-Marie Albiach's establishes the genetic code for the piece, without the words having to be spoken.. Her text is, in the true sense of the word, measured from one syntagma (syntactical element), from one void (space) to another, and this results in temporal structures of ensemble texture. This is opposed to another texture, which is the temporal measurement of a recitation of the text by the author: her voice, using the range of her voice, is the viola solo - a recitation, in its unique individuality, on which the cold, typographical structure of the ensemble superimposed. Every time I read a text of Anne-Marie Albiach, it seems to me that she is saying that which I do. An extremely rare coincidence, like that with the violist Odile Auboin, the soloist, who I think works in the same manner and has the same approach to things. Score available separately - see item CA.1632600.

P erformance Material on Hire[S olo: SSATTB - Choir: SATB - 2.2.2.2 - 4.2.3.0 - Tp - Hp - Str]Francesca da Rimini is a drama for music in two acts by Saverio Mercadante, libretto by Felice Romani; the text is freely inspired by the unfortunate events of the two lovers, Francesca and Paolo, of which Dante's Comedy (canto V) also narrates.According to some scholars, the first performance of Francesca da Rimini took place in Madrid in January 1828; however, this date is not reflected in the Diario de Avisos de Madrid, a publication that daily reserved a conspicuous space for news on the shows staged in the Spanish city: the years between 1828 and 1831 in fact do not mention the work. Furthermore, no printed libretto of Mercadante's Francesca da Rimini is preserved today – an inexplicable fact, if one admits that the performance took place. The text of the opera can be largely traced back to the one prepared by Romani for the homonymous work by Antonio Carlini (Naples 1825), which Mercadante was able to know before his stay in Spain.Following the missed Spanish premiere, the opera should then have been represented at La Scala Theater in a subsequent season, with reliability the imminent one of the 1831/32 carnival; but shortly thereafter the impresario died: thus the contractual obligations involving him were no longer fulfilled, and, for a second time, Mercadante was then forced to shelve the plans about Francesca da Rimini, put aside now for several months. In fact, the scoring – very similar to that of the operas planned at La Scala in the same Carnival period – assumes that Francesca da Rimini was destined for a theatre of great means, like few others in Italy besides La Scala. But the failure of the opera may also have been due to the presence of the part of an amoroso en travesti, Paolo, to whom Mercadante assigns a prominent role also in terms of music: in 1831 and in Italy such a solution was no longer so frequent as a few years before or in provincial theatres, and so this condition may possibly have affected the fate of the negotiations in Milan, and may explain how the composer was then unable to have the score performed elsewhere. This critical edition is based on manuscript copies conserved in the Museo internazionale e Biblioteca della Musica di Bologna (autograph score) and in the Biblioteca Histórica Municipal in Madrid (score and separate parts).

String Quartet No. 1 is a powerful and harmonically dynamic string quartet in four movements. It mixes both tonal and dissonant musical landscapes in an elegant way. The quartet may also be experienced as a kind of coming-of-age story. After the calm first movement’s confident simplicity of youth, the second movement reflects the increasing complications and conflicts of young adulthood, with fraught exploration, the discovery of possible romance, and new tensions now replacing the youthful calm. The third movement reflects on maturity and the experiences of love and loss, before the finale—a set of complex chromatic fugues—evokes the fight against fate and time to achieve one’s goals in life. The movement’s end briefly recapitulates the first movement, suggesting that ultimately life comes full circle as we see the totality of our experience. As LA Opus music critic, John Stodder, said about this work, The protagonist discovers the presence of life's purpose. String Quartet Duration: 19' Composed: 2019 Published by: Todd Mason.
