Sextuor A Cordes

Bertold Hummel worked on his Adagietto for many years. Originally conceived as an Elegy for Strings in 1965, it was transformed into an Adagietto for String Sextet in 1978 and published for the first time in 1993. Hummel undertook a further arrangement of the composition in 1999 and participated with musical friends in its first performance. In one of the scores, the title is supplemented by the term “sacrale”, an indication of the religious background of this composition. In a time of increasing secularisation, the creative and no doubt also the reproducing artist have the task of pointing out to their contemporaries the transcendental, the inexplicable and the unprovable. The language of music - most effective perhaps in reaching across world frontiers - has an especially important role in this. Representations of suffering and horror alone cannot be the inherent constituent of a work of art. A reference to comfort and hope is indispensable. Furthermore, life, nature, and, for the believer, knowledge of God give cause enough for praise and thanks.” This is how my father once formulated his artistic conception. A favourite adopted term of his, “musikalische Klangrede” [musical speech), appears to me to be particularly well implemented in the Adagietto.

Composed in 1901-02, Mahler's 5th Symphony contains the Adagietto movement scored for strings and harp, perhaps the most serene, simple, spiritual and peaceful music of his entire output. The music was likely composed as a love song to his new wife Alma. Ralph Sauer has beautifully arranged the movement for solo Horn with Piano accompaniment. The 8 minute long work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Eduard Putz (1911-2000) studied with Heinrich Lemacher and Hermann Schroeder at the Cologne Musikhochschule and later worked as a music teacher at the grammar school in Rheinbach near Bonn as well as a composition teacher at the Rhenish Music School in Cologne. Overcoming the boundaries between serious and entertaining music was what mattered to him which is why he wrote many works which tried to combine jazz and new music. His 'Adagietto' for violoncello and piano (1990) was discovered within the composer's estate and published for the first time. Prof. Julius Berger arranged the piece for practical playing, adding appropriate fingerings. A short performance piece with interesting harmonies and arpeggios in the piano part and expressive cantilenas in the cello part.

Pucc ini’s Adagetto for small orchestra (without trumpets, trombones, and timpani) was probably written in the early 1880s while the composer was still a student in Milan. A few years later he reused the work’s theme in his opera Edgar, where it appears in Act 3 during Fidelia’s aria “Addio, mio dolce amor” as she laments Edgar's supposed death. This touching piece is now available as a separate edition from Volume II.1 of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini (Carus 56.002) with all orchestral parts.
