Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer versuchte sich in seiner Kindheit auf verschiedenen Instrumenten und gelangte dann uber den Kontrabass zum Violoncello. Bereits als 16jahriger wurde er in die Hofkapelle Meiningen aufgenommen, und nachdem er seinen letzten Schliff als Virtuose von der Vortragskunst Bernhard Rombergs erhalten hatte, wurde er, 28jahrig, als sachsischer Kammermusiker an die Dresdner Hofkapelle berufen. Als Lehrer hat Dotzauer vorzugliche Cellisten herangebildet; neben Unterrichtswerken schrieb er auch diverse Werke verschiedener Gattungen. Das ,,Quartett fur Fagott und Streichtrio ist dreisatzig angelegt:, einem Allegro in B-dur folgt ein dreiteiliges Andantino in Es-dur mit einem Minore in es-moll; den Abschluss bildet ein lebhaftes Rondo in B-dur.

Of his extensive life-work the abundance of educational compositions has proved to be of lasting value in the first place. The idea to compile and publish a selection from his educational life-work that meets the demands of the time emerged at the end of the 19th century already. Of the several publications of this kind the work by Johannes Klingenberg has turned out to be the most successful.Justus Johann Friedrich Dotzauer war studierter Cellist und Komponist einer Oper, mehrerer Sinfonien, einer Messe und Kammermusik. Von seinem umfangreichen Werk sind aber vor allem seine pädagogischen Werke, darunter zwei Cello-Schulen und zahlreiche Etüden, heute noch sehr geschätzt. Schon im 19. Jahrhundert gab es Versuche, eine Auswahl davon zusammen zu fassen. Unter diesen hat sich die hier in vier Bänden vorliegende Ausgabe von Johannes Klingenberg am besten bewährt.

Dotza uer etudes have been part of the standard repertoire in cello lessons for generations. Friedrich Dotzauer (1783-1860) was amongthe major cellists and cello pedagogues of the 19th century and knew what makes a good etude: it should deal specifically with a certain technical problem and at the same time not be monotonous, but musically appealing. The cellist of the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Dresden Hofkapelle managed to do that in an exemplary manner. 24 Caprici in tutti tuoni Op. 35 (1816) is Dotzauer's masterpiece,wonderfully showing off the varied tone colours and playing techniques of the violoncello. Demanding etudes for lessons and performances, with beautiful melodic and harmonic ideas, some with slow expressive introductions, some with artistic arpeggios or contrapuntal polyphony. Our new edition follows the original sources and contains the original text.
