These Piano Anthologies contain pieces which have been carefully selected from previous piano exam lists dating from 1988 to 2006. All of the pieces in these volumes have proved popular with piano students, teachers and listeners, and we are pleased to be able to make them available again in these new collections. Pieces from these anthologies may be chosen as List B and C pieces, allowing students to increase their choice of repertoire beyond the already extensive selection offered in the LCM piano repertoire lists for grade, recital grade and leisure play options. It is hoped that these anthologies will also be of interest to piano students generally. The range of styles broadlycovers the late 18th century to the present. Some familiar pieces are present in these volumes, but they include pieces additionally from composers who have had a distinguished career in the role of teacher or student at LCM. Amongst the former are William Lloyd Webber and Martyn Williams, and amongst the latter are Nicholas Grace and John Guilfoyle, who now have eminent academic and professional musical careers.

This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. There are four existing harpsichord books with a total of 226 compositions by Francois Couperin le Grand (1668 -1733). His works are as unknown to pianists as they are famous among harpsichord players. The grace and imaginativeness of his works lend themselves especially well to the sound of the harpsichord, which is why the piano interpretation of works by Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti and other composers of that time has been categorically rejected. But, after all, the works of Bach and Handel were written for the haipsichord and clavichord, and no one would dare question their intetpretation on the pianoforte. In order to introduce these lmpressionists of the Baroque Era to piano instruction, the editor has added to this series a folio of both Couperin's and Rameau's (EB 8033) music. The selection of the pieces is based on two criteria: 1. relatively modest demands made on technique, 2. various musical forms of expression. The Butterflies and the Windmills are both especially typical of masterful character pieces. The demands made on technique certainly correspond to a level of moderate difficulty. The simplifications made are restricted to the artistically realized twopart accompaniment (eg. p. 4 f. and p. 8 f.) with regard to finger stretch and to the profuse ornamentation of the original. The indications for phrasing and articulation are those of the editor. The first two pieces have been precisely elaborated on in this respect to serve as a model, whereas the remaining pieces contain only suggestions. As in other folios of this series; what is here to be stressed, is the importance of working out independently the phrasing and the dynamics. Directions for this are given by the respective footnotes; these directions, however, are not obligatory. lndications pertaining to dynamics and tempo have been omitted completely; the clearly recognizable character of the individual pieces should be direction enough. The tonal possibilities of the piano should in any case be used subtly. The very precise fingerings have been adapted to the suggested phrasings and to the corresponding realization of trills (according to the table). Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1980.

BachScholar Editions Vol. 68 – DIABELLI: The First 12 Studies for the Piano, Op. 125 (11 pages) consists of twelve easy and attractive short pieces in the Viennese Classical style, which appeared in ca. 1821. The set also works ideally as sight-reading material for students at slightly higher levels (Grades 4-6). Anton Diabelli (1781-1858) was a prolific composer and publisher who wrote especially idiomatic music for piano students. This absolutely delightful set of instructional pieces – supplied with expression, fingerings, and tempi – is indispensable for all students and teachers. Piano Published by: BachScholar.

Ottavio Bariola was a famous Milanese organist in the late 16th century. Only a relatively small number of his works is known to survive, among them a collection of ricercares and canzonas. The present edition offers a selection of ten pieces of the latter collection. In agreement with their genre the compositions are strictly polyphonic in structure. In this edition the works are included in a four-part setting with consistent part-writing. Due to their volume and grade of difficulty the pieces are not meant for concert hall performance in the first place but for enriching the repertoire of church organists and lovers of early music.

In the dim moonlight on a night long past a rider emerges from the fog and slowly dares to cross a mysterious and unsettling bridge. The trembling rider hesitates, unsure whether he is more nervous about the legend of the headless horseman or the creaking and shifting he feels under his own horse's hooves. Haunted Bridges is a work for string orchestra inspired by Washington Irving's Ichabod Crane and his ill-fated ride in Sleepy Hollow. The piece contains allusions to the tune London Bridge is Falling Down, first as a creeping counter-melody and later as a theme in a twisted 3/4 section whose shifting harmonic progression draws to mind the fall of the fabled bridge. Haunted Bridges contains alternating F/C sharps and naturals throughout and devilishly unpredictable harmonic patterns. The piece also calls for numerous extended techniques that students will enjoy, including playing behind the bridge, sul ponticello, portamento, and seagull glissandi. Special techniques: Haunted Bridges calls for a handful of extended techniques, most of which are self explanatory or commonly known. The technique appearing in the Violin II part from measures 58-72 may require some additional explanation. This figure is sometimes referred to as seagull glissando and is achieved by lightly touching the finger to the string and gliding up and down the string, producing many transient natural harmonics as the finger crosses the nodes of the string. It is suggested to start with the 3rd finger on the A string and slowly glissando up beyond the natural A harmonic, then slowly back down, continuing in this pattern until measure 73. It is also intended for each player to vary their speed slightly so that the timing of the glissandi are all a little different, resulting in a shimmering, aleatoric effect. In the dim moonlight on a night long past a rider emerges from the fog and slowly dares to cross a mysterious and unsettling bridge. This volume contains contrasting works by Federico Ruiz spanning quite a large and rich period of his compositional output that goes from his early Micro-Suite (1971), to lilting, sweet and rhythmic Venezuelan waltzes passing by the mysterious, intimate, and intense Nocturno (1994) plus pieces originally composed for film, and theatre. Real eclecticism in styles, moods and atmospheres that show Ruiz??s talents and scope. The Nocturno is a deep, intriguing, substantial piece presenting a satisfying length which moves from different paths of the mind and the heart written in an abstract, chromatic idiom, that does not dissociate itself from the Venezuelan waltz and the joropo. One could perhaps say that there is a deconstruction of the latter. For the interpretation, the composer has suggested to me that it is allowed to have some flexibility in the tempo. Ruiz kindly dedicated it to me, and I have had the pleasure of performing it in many concerts.Although all highly expressive, the Three Venezuelan Waltzes present in this collection as well as the piece titled Aliseo, are works that are close to the colourful Venezuelan folk tradition. Federico Ruiz had given me two of them when we first met: ??Tu Presencia?? (1981) and ??Eloísa?? (1989) and then I attended a performance of the play ??Office Number One?? by Miguel Otero Silva with a fantastic actor, Elba Escobar in the role of Carmen Rosa and, I just fell in love and was very moved by the incidental music that I later discovered, by reading the programme, had been written by Federico Ruiz. Later that evening, I called him and asked to please make a piano score of the composition, so I could have the desired piece in my hands. That is how ??Carmen Rosa? waltz (1987) came to exist in a piano version.??Eloisa ?? is another Venezuelan waltz with more jazzy harmonies where precision in the rhythm and elegant playing is also essential, as it is in most of his pieces.??Tu Presencia?? was dedicated to his mother, Margarita. It is written with the structure of the Venezuelan waltz, which consists of a nostalgic subject that leads to a faster, happier middle section where the typical graceful rhythm is given by the left-hand accompaniment figure of a dotted crotchet followed by a quaver and a crotchet. The craft and magic found in the five movements of the Micro-Suite is based on a dodecaphonic row by Ernst Krenek. They remind us of the idiom of the Second Viennese School. These real miniatures seem to tell short stories. The ??Preludio?? is full of humour. I imagine dancing figures given by the jumps all over the keyboard and extreme dynamics; the phrases give the impression of a conversation with many questions and answers. The ??Invención?? is a kaleidoscopic piece where the hands mirror each other. The ??Passacaglia?? is the longest movement, at just over a minute where the prime motif is repeated three times on the bass line. For its construction Federico Ruiz uses as well the retrograde and the retrograde inversion of the twelve-tone series. It must be played expressively with dynamic contrasts between pianissimo and louder events. The ??Scherzo?? has repetitive motifs of a minor third in both hands and the ??Final?? displays virtuosic passages for the pianist.Aliseo was originally written for the film ??Aire libre? (1995), by Luis Armando Roche. It contains elements of diverse types of Venezuelan joropo. In the film, the character of Aliseo Carvallo is played by the composer himself who performs this piece on a harpsichord to welcome scientists Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland one day at the turn of the 1800??s, as a sample of the new music from the South American land. It presents the refinement of the late European classical era in fusion with Venezuelan folk music.

The phoenix is a mythical symbol that dates back to ancient times, representing the idea of rebirth and being born again out of the ashes. This piece explores the idea of taking a rhythmic motive and developing it in such a way that it gains momentum, then dies away before rising to even greater heights. Set in E minor, this piece works in particular on the finger pattern for D-sharp accidentals in all parts. The fiery theme builds slowly using accented accompaniments and dramatic dynamics to build intensity. A brief lull reveals a lyrical melody, allowing players to perfect four-note slurs with optional shifting in first violin. Then the opening theme returns with even greater fire, growing to a glorious finale.
