During the first quarter of the 20th century, most of America's hit songs were produced on a two-block stretch of 28th Street in New York City known as Tin Pan Alley for the constant racket of beat-up pianos being played in the dozens of music publishing houses there. Many of these songs became timeless standards of American popular music, and live on to this day.
