Hans Werner Henze's output is primarily dominated by large-scale, representative musical genres with a richly differentiated instrumental tonal palette: opera and other forms of musical theatre works, ballet, solo concertos and cantatas and also music for large-scale orchestra or chamber ensemble. In contrast, the chamber music works which Henze has composed throughout his entire compositional career right up to the present day have always remained somewhat on the sidelines. Many of these chamber music works had been composed for specific occasions, chiefly to honour figures who had accompanied him on longer or shorter stretches of his journey through life.
Henze composed An Brenton in July 1993 for an event commemorating the Australian violinist Brenton Langbein who had just died. The violinist had been a long-standing leader of the Collegium Musicum Zurich, the orchestra established and conducted by Paul Sacher, and was subsequently also the leader of the Basel Chamber Orchestra [Basler Kammerorchester].He additionally held a violin class at the Music Academy in Basel for a substantial period of his career. Interestingly enough, this piece is not composed for the violinist's instrument, but instead for solo viola. The work was given its first performance on 15 July 1993 by Jurg Dahler, one of the two viola players of the Chamber Musicians of Zurich [KammermusikerZurich]. This ensemble had been formed by Langbein in 1962: it frequently included compositions by Henze in its programmes and had given the premiere of Henze's music for Volker Schlondorffs Film Der junge Torless in its transformation as the Fantasia of the same name for string sextet (1967) in 1968. Langbein was the soloist in the first performance of Henze's Violin Concerto No. 2 in 1972 which had been commissioned by Paul Sacher. Henze had already made acquaintance with Langbein during the 1960s.

My idea of developing music from Richard of Gloucester's monologue 'Now is the winter of our discontent', and of generating more music from that material, was conceived during the 1960s. Ten years later it took a more concrete form, when Julian Bream suggested to me that I should write a substanial new guitar work for him. More time went by, and only having finished 'We Come to the River' could I begin to realise our plan. Then began a collaboration with the instrumentalist that went through various phases, from which I gained a more profound knowledge of the technicalities and of the sound-world of the guitar. I would even go so far as to say that this collaboration gave me a new concept of how to write for an instrument with a rich tradition. The guitar is a 'knowing' or 'knowledgeable' instrument, with many limitations but also many unexplored spaces and depths within these limits. It possesses a richness of sound capable of embracing everything one might find in a gigantic contemporary orchestra. but one has to start from silence in order to notice this: one has to pause, and completely exclude noise.
The dramatis personae of this piece enter through the sound of the guitar as if it were curtain. Through masks, voices and gestures, they speak to us of great passion, of tenderness, sadness and comedy: strange events in people's lives. Into this, the whispering voices of spirits are mingled. The epilogue is spoken by Oberon, pacified and reconciled, as though Nature had been subjected to Man.

Die Form sowie das Fortschreiten dieser drei Sätze stehen im direkten Zusammenhang mit der Struktur des Films. Die Sonate enthält zwei kontrastierende Hauptelemente. Hiervon be-zieht sich das eine auf Elisabeth und ihre Ekstase der Liebe und Furcht; das andere verkörpert Bedrohung, Angst und tonales Symbol, das mit der ständig wachsenden Zahl von den Tod betref-fenden Bildern sowie der Faszination, die diese auf Simon aus-üben, in Zusammenhang steht. Der Sonatensatz endet mit dem Tod von Simon. Der zweite Satz, die MELODIE voller tragischer Akzente und versteckter Anspielungen auf Symbole und Gestik der Oper des 18. Jahrhunderts, enthält Hinweise auf den thematischen Stoff des ersten Satzes. Resnais bezeichnet dies als „la separation (die Trennung). Hierbei geht es um die Zeit zwischen Simons Tod und Elisabeths Entscheidung, ihm zu folgen. Im Film wird die MELODIE (deren Zeilen eine fast buchstäbliche Umsetzung des gesprochenen Textes sind, wie z.B. „je te promets (ich verspreche Dir), durch die Handlung und die Dialoge in regelmäßigen Abständen durchbrochen, jedoch dann immer wieder aufgenommen. Vom Konzept her soll sie durchgängig gespielt werden. Die MELODIE verklingt ganz allmählich und nähert sich dem Rezitativ, ja Ausruf, so als wolle sie Elisabeth in ihrem Klagen und ihren Schmerzensschreien unterstützen und mit ihr sagen: „Je déteste la vie sans Simon (Ich verabscheue ein Leben ohne Simon). Die Passacaglia am Schluß stellt „le départ (den Abschied) dar. Der Bass, in der Regel von der Pauke gespielt, besteht aus den hohen Noten des Themas, das (von der Bassklarinette) im 1. Satz eingeführt worden war, um Simon im Reich der Toten zu zeigen. Fragmente und Erinnerungen an vorausgegangene Ereignisse werden durch den beharrlichen Bass im Herzschlag Rhythmus eingeworfen, wobei die Musik aus dem Reich der Toten allmählich von den untersten Registern, gleichsam einer Flut, aufsteigt, den gesamten Raum einnimmt und letztlich alles andere überdeckt und auslöscht. -Hans Werner Henze.

It is a summer piece and is based on three moments from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream‘, writes Hans Werner Henze. This, however, is all we get to know from the composer regarding the work’s reference to Shakespeare’s comedy. On closer examination of the three-movement symphony it turns out that the first movement is a fantasia on Oberon’s order to Puck to search for the magic flower. In the second movement, Henze apparently set the love scenes between Titania and Bottom to music. Enzensberger told me of the recent publication of a biography by Estéban Montejo, an old Afrocuban who lived in Havana and who recalled his adolescence as a slave, and suggested that I should set episodes from this book that he, Enzensberger, would select for my experimentation. El Cimarrón, however, did not turn into a cycle of songs and was, indeed, not even intended as such - what came out of the work is a new form of theatrical music making. German.Im Frühling 1957 schrieb ich Nachtstücke und Arien, mit Ingeborgs Gedichten Freies Geleit und Im Gewitter der Rosen. Das letztere bestand anfangs nur aus einem Vierzeiler bis sie mir für die Komposition, aus Gründen der Symmetrie noch einen zweiten Vierzeiler hinzuschrieb, der das Gedicht noch viel schöner macht. In diesen Zeilen ist ungefähr die vorherrschende Stimmung von Nachtstücke und Arien wiedergegeben, auch wenn in der anderen Arie ein chorischer Hymnus aus eine schöne, atombombenfreie Zukunft gesungen und gespielt wird, was sich im instrumentalen Finale fortsetzt, in dessen Zentrum übrigens ein paar Noten aus dem Epilog von Ondine auftauchen. Mit dieser Musik hatte ich wohl die extremste Gegenposition zur sogenannten Darmstädter Schule erreicht, und so nimmt es denn auch nicht weiter wunder, dass bei der von Gloria Davy gesungenen und von Hans Rosbaud glänzend dirigierten Uraufführung am 20. Oktober 1957 in Donaueschingen drei Vertreter des anderen Extrems, Boulez, Nono (mein Freund der Gigi!) und Stockhausen, demonstrativ schon nach den ersten Takten von ihren Plätzen aufsprangen und den Saal verließen. German • English.Edward Bond hat für das Programmheft der Stuttgarter Uraufführung des Tanzdramas Orpheus am 17. März 1979 anstelle eines Essays eine Anzahl von Gedichten geschrieben, die als Marginalien zu seinem visionären Ballett-Libretto zu verstehen sind. Für den Chorzyklus hat er noch einige weitere Gedichte hinzugefügt. Ich habe aus beiden Materialien eine Auswahl getroffen und sie im Sommer 1983 während eines langen Lehraufenthaltes in Tanglewood, Mass., in Musik gesetzt, mit Ausnahme von zwei Sätzen, die schon existierten, und von denen 'Epitaph' 1982 in Kindberg, Steiermark, als Teil eines Requiems für den Arbeiterdichter Walter Buchebner durch den ORF-Chor uraufgeführt wurde, während das andere 'Pressed by the weight of...' durch den Chor der Musikhochschule Köln als Zeil einer von AIDA organisierten Solidaritätskundgebung für die argentinischen desaparecidos aufgeführt wurde. - Hans Werner Henze.
