The Dave Brubeck Quartet's 1959 album Time Out changed the sound of jazz and American music. Brubeck's experimentation with meter, harmony and even Turkish rhythms eventually earned him the cover of Time Magazine- the first jazz musician to achieve such a feat. Saxophonist Paul Desmond's composition 'Take Five' went on to become the first million-selling jazz instrumental single on the Billboard Hot 100. This book of nocturnes is directed toward the music teachers who do not teach Jazz and to their students who are not yet committed to learn Jazz improvisations. Some of my piano books contain improvisations transcribed from my recordings important for jazz students who wish to study how improvisations develop from basic thematic and harmonic material. The American jazz legend Dave Brubeck (1920-2012) was equally distinguished as composer and pianist. Studies at the College of the Pacific and with Darius Milhaud at Mills College led to the founding with fellow students of the experimental Jazz Workshop Ensemble which recorded in 1949 as the Dave Brubeck Octet. Later in 1958 the combination of Brubeck with drummer Joe Morello double bassist Eugene Wright and alto saxophonist Paul Desmond quickly achieved an overwhelming popular success as the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
