The latest volume in the series contains not too lengthy romantic works arranged for four cellos. In addition to two choral works by Liszt and an orchestral funeral march by Tchaikovsky, well-known piano pieces by Schumann, Chopin and Liszt served as the bases for these arrangements. The four parts differ in their degree of difficulty: the upper ones lie higher, while the lower ones are easier, playable at the level of the top classes in music schools. inhoud:1. Liszt: Consolations2. Liszt: LÉternel est son nom3. Liszt: O Roma nobilis4. Tchaikovsky: Marche funebre5. Schumann, Robert: Ein Choral6. Schumann, Robert: Figurierter Choral7. Schumann, Robert: Der Dichter spricht8. Schumann, Robert: Sylvesterlied9 . Sommaire:< BR>1. Britten's arrangements of Schubert's The Trout (op 32/D550) for small orchestra, and Schumann's Spring Night (op 39 no 12) for chamber orchestra, dating from 1942, are settings of anonymous English translations. The new edition includes the original German words (Schubart, Eichendorff), as many performers and audiences will prefer the songs in the original language. In his preface, Nicholas Clark, Librarian at the Britten-Pears Foundation, speculates on why the songs were set in English and on the possibility that the translator was Peter Pears, commenting that “the English language settings allowed [Britten] to edge away from existing versions of the songs, to assist him in imprinting his own unique mark on both works.” The Trout is scored for 2 clarinets & strings; Spring Night for flute, oboe, 2 clarinets, bassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, trombone, triangle, harp (or piano) and strings.

In the summer of 1852, Vier Stücke ['Four Pieces'] for viola and piano by Robert Schumann were published under the title Märchenbilder ['Fairy-Tale Pictures'] by the Kassel publishing house Luckhardt, with a particularly expressive vignette on the titlepage. Unusual were both this title Märchenbilder, on the one hand, and the scoring with a solo viola, on the other. With the viola in a soloistic role in chamber music, Schumann's Märchenbilder, Op. 113, offers a rather unfamiliar, but all the more delightful sound.

Wilh elm Killmayer puts a single note at the heart of this composition. Butwhereas Robert Schumann took it as the starting point of his romanticism,Killmayer doesn't allow himself the freedom to develop poetic melodies. Just as Schumann deliberately decided to live within the constraints of a mental asylum in Endenich, Killmayer favours the constraints of a very limited tonal space. Recurring seconds in the piano part illustrate the confines in the life of the ill composer. Even the addition of a vibraphone, bongo and conga cannot overcome these boundaries in the end. The only option left is to look inwards for an escape. And when refined tone colours are revealed in a dialogue between piano and glockenspiel, Schumann in Endenich turns into a journey into the consciousness of an enigmatic fellow human being.Schlagzeug I: Glockenspiel, Ruhrtrommel, hohe Pedalpauke; Schlagzeug II: Glockenspiel, Xylophon, Bongo (mittel), Holzfass (oder grosses Holzbrett mit Resonanz); Schlagzeug III: Vibraphon, Marimbaphon, 2 Congas (mittel-tief), Ruhrtrommel; Schlagzeug IV: Gong in c, Steinspiel (a''), Bongo (tief), Ruhrtrommel, Pauke in g; Schlagzeug V: grosses Tamtam, Gegenschlagholzer (yoshigi), Pauke in E und A (cis), Conga (mittel).

The six piano works 'Sonata No. 2' Op. 22, 'Nachtstucke' Op. 23, 'Faschingsschwank aus Wien' Op. 26, 'Drei Romanzen' Op. 28, 'Scherzo, Gigue, Romanze and Fughette' Op. 32 as well as '43 Clavierstucke fur die Jugend' Op. 68 (the so-called 'Album for the Youth') were created between 1830 and 1848. They document the transition in Schumann's compositional work from the early time focussed completely on piano compositions to the following period which was dominated by other genres such as lied, chamber music or orchestral works and in which works for piano solo rather played a minor role.
