The arranger of this work (a well-known Hungarian composer living in Romania) writes: This piece has always excited my imagination, from several points of view. First of all, its name. The German title, the obstinate one, may refer to its ostinato character. This is close to Liszt's programme concept, but the French word 'obstiné' is closer in meaning to stubborn. There is just a shade of difference, but to me it is important, because the latter suggests the description of a type of behaviour, the emotional state of a dancer's inner frame of mind abstracted into movements, expressed in dance movements, and this is a fascinating interpretation. The demonstration ofstubborn resistance and defiance to the point of exhaustion was not a frequently occurring phenomenon with Liszt. Secondly, at the beginning of the seventies Zoltán Kocsis played the piece in Transylvania. At that time, I asked the composer, Is the character of the continuous staccato in the left hand sharp, short, or an accompanying background like a constant shadow? Is it a weighty Brahmsian staccato, an ominous knocking? - and so on. Then there are the Bartókian false relations that keep recurring in the work, the B-E flat-G, etc. That foreshadows Debussy, creating harmonic thrills that, when I hear the work, keep my continuing interest alive for it. Finally, my immediate reason for arranging the work was of a family nature: in connection with Liszt's jubilee year, my daughter, who is a cellist, wanted a 'more energetic' piece to play at a bicentenary concert an addition to the existing slow, lyrical, or sombre works written by Liszt for the cello. A Tedious Brief Scene: Bottom's Dance (2011) is a fine example of Holmes work from her career as a composer and educator in New Zealand for over 25 years. Holmes was inspired to depict the character Bottom from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in writing this lighthearted work. It is highly engaging and energetic with elements of minimalist techniques of layered melodic ostinati, and jazz-influenced and non-tonal harmony. Like the character and scene from Shakespeare's play, the music oscillates between moments of poignancy and boisterous self-confidence. It incorporates a variety of accented rhythmic patterns, changing metres and delicate melodic material, which gives pianists an opportunity to demonstrate their individual and combined talents as a chamber ensembles. Equinox was written in late 2011 as a showcase for the euphonium quartet Euphony, who gave the premiere at the opening concert of the 'Festival of Brass' at the Royal Northern College of Music in January 2012. Since then, Euphony have played the work extensively, including a performance at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference in June 2012, at the Brucknerhaus Concert Hall in Linz, Austria. The word 'equinox' is derived from the Latin aequi (equal) and nox (night). It is the name given to the twice-yearly occasion when the earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the sun, so that day and night are of the same duration. With this in mind I structured the work from two thematic groups, consisting of sections of equal length. The first, which is heard after a brief introduction, is marked Energico, and its character is marked by sustained, lyrical lines unfolding over an accompaniment of rapid and deftly articulated rhythmical phrases. The second section, slow and expressive, offers the strongest contrast both in mood and tempo. By a further association of ideas, this sharp distinction of material could be thought of as representing the frenzy of daytime in comparison with the tranquillity of night. In the third and final section, figures from both the preceding sections are brought together in a vigorous finale, the interplay of the four parts intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the euphonium to the full. Equinox was the winning entry in the 2012 Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition, held at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

It has a vast chapel intended by its founder, Revd Nathaniel Woodard, as the cathedral for all the schools of his extensive foundation known collectively as 'Woodard' schools. St. Nicolas is famous for many legendary miracles and for being the original 'Santa Claus'. Crozier's libretto is designed to tell the story of his life, to recount some of his most celebrated acts and to give the audience/congregation the opportunity of joining in two beautiful hymns at key moments: 'All people that on earth do dwell' and 'God moves in a mysterious way his wonders to perform'. The narration is all done by the choir, though the tenor sings first-person narratives as well in his role as the mature Nicolas. The young Nicolas is sung by a boy in movement II. There is a dramatic moment at the end of this movement when the boy's voice does a tumble and the tenor proclaims in the voice of Nicolas as a young man: 'God be glorified'.The third movement is an accompanied recitative in which the soloist sings of Nicolas devoting himself to God through the agonies and torment of the many distractions and temptations of life. His faith wins through and he sings a final touching phrase: 'and Love was satisfied'. The sea whips up a storm in the next movement: 'He journeys to Palestine'. It threatens to overturn the ship and drown everyone on board. There is wailing from the sopranos and altos of the semi-chorus and agonised calls from the tenors and basses to 'man the pumps'. Finally, Nicolas begs God to let the storm cease and offers thanks for their safe delivery. Britten creates a palpable sense of relief in the final pages.In the fifth movement, 'Nicolas comes to Myra and is chosen Bishop', the choir sings chorale-like phrases welcoming him as their new Bishop. They go through his ceremonial dressing with all the accoutrements of his office, the mitre, crozier (nice pun on the librettist's name), robe and ring. An energetic chorus 'Serve the faith and spurn his enemies' leads to the first great hymn - a wonderfully climactic moment. Britten's arrangement is suitably uplifting.The final movement tells of Nicolas' death and the work ends with the other great hymn: 'God moves in a mysterious way'. This work demonstrates to me Britten's generosity of spirit and his natural feeling for enriching the repertoire at all levels of attainment.
