The Vocal Library. A huge collection of 70 sacred songs for classical singers spanning an enormous range of literature including art songs traditional songs classic Burleigh spiritual arrangements (experts on African-American spirituals contend they are for singers of all ethnic heritages) and distinctive concert arrangements of hymns and folksongs by Richard Walters. Johann Sebastian Bach?s arrangements of the ?69 Sacred Songs? from the Musical Hymnal by Georg Christian Schemelli (Leipzig, 1736) have long been part of the German language vocal concert repertoire and a mainstay in vocal pedagogy. Originally, only these 69 of the 954 hymns in the collection were published with a single bass line as the accompaniment. Bach?s contribution was to specify harmonies to be played over those same bass lines by adding figured bass numbers and symbols beneath each note.A figured bass line can easily be turned into a relatively simple guitar accompaniment or a more elaborate setting, offering a range of possibilities that make working with this music both interesting and rewarding for the guitarist. While other period and modern editions of the ?69 Sacred Songs? offer accompaniments for keyboard instruments, this Mel Bay publication features intermediate to advanced transcriptions exclusively for the guitar.Best suited to college-level players or advanced aficionados, this special Mel Bay Publications edition includes the vocal line with German lyrics and the guitar accompaniment transcribed from Bach?s figured bass lines. Written in guitar-friendly keys, 29 of the transcriptions employ a capo to achieve the original key designed for high voices. Without the capo, these same arrangements would be suitable to be sung by lower voices. Frigé-The Dixit Dominus RV 595 shares a key and some further characteristics with the better-known setting of the same psalm RV 594 but differs from it markedly: first in being scored for an undivided ensemble (i.e. not ?in due cori?): second in belonging to Vivaldi?s first period of sacred music composition around 1715 rather than to a later period. There are stylistic parallels too with Vivaldi?s two Gloria settings RV 588 and RV 589. Three of the eleven movements making up RV 595 use borrowed material which in two instances is taken from movements by unknown composers in Vivaldi?s own collection and in one instance (heavily disguised) from a published madrigal(1705) by Antonio Lotti. The borrowings are absorbed extremely well into the fabric of the setting and do not disrupt its well-unified character. Among the high points of RV 595 are its opening pair of moments ? the first bustling and the second poignantly reflective ? and the fourth movement ?Tecum principium? where two obbligato cellos enter into dialogue with two sopranos. This Dixit Dominus preserved uniquely in Prague ranks among Vivaldi?s finest large-scale sacred vocal compositions. The Introduction and Critical Commentary for this vocal score are based on the Critical Edition by Michael Talbot published in 1993.
