Par BARTOK BELA. Béla Bartók’s “For Children” is one of the best known pedagogical works for piano teachers of the twentieth century, second only perhaps to the same composer’s “Mikrokosmos”. It was based firmly on the huge number of folk songs he collected, recorded and studied with his colleague Zoltán Kodály. At the time, Bartók was offering something very new to piano teachers and their students. Siegfried Steinkogler became acquainted with “For Children” at the beginning of his guitar studies and, from them, learnt a great deal about melody and harmonisation. He has chosen 38 of the original 79 pieces to offer in arrangements for the guitar. They are presented with helpful fingerings, technical solutions and aids to familiarize the younger students with common notations. For beginners, ten of the pieces are played exclusively in the first position before a gently increasing level of difficulty helps the player broaden their skills. John Duarte was passionate about introducing English musicians to the cultural wealth of their own indigenous folk songs. Using the great collection of folk songs that were ‘run to earth’ in the early 1900’s by Cecil Sharpe and Ralph Vaughan Williams among many others Duarte has made a selection of what he considered beautiful characterful tunes set them for the Guitar student and collected them in Sixteen English Folk Songs.Duarte originally earned a degree in chemistry and worked as an industrial chemist for year before abandoning that life to devote himself to music. Agustin Pio Barrios Ferreyra, a Paraguayan composer and guitarist, is nowadays known as the creator of the Mangorean or Indo-American school of the Guitar. ?The name, Mangoré, was adopted in honor of the great chieftain Mangoré, an important personage of the Paraguayan jungles?.Mangoré used for his works popular folkloristic themes of South America as well as sounds of nature (?the still waters of [?] the Amazon?, ?the song of the birds?). But Magnoré also was inspired by European music: He composed gavottes, minuets and waltzes: ?It was in J.S.Bach where Barrios discovered the source of his universality [?]?.Admired by many but despised by more was his way of stringing his guitar: ?[?] the way he attacked the strings with the fingers sideward, with very little use of the fingernails?. He also invented some kind of a muffler: He put ?small balls of rubber on the Pirastro steel string?. Jesus Benites R. who collected Magnoré?s works for this edition says about him: ?Magnore is the genius of South America?. He was a strong influence for many composers and musicians, such as Heitor Villa-Lobos, Manuel Ponce and Andres Segovia. The present collection of guitar ensemble music was originally created for the Piedmont Guitar Orchestra (PGO) a community-oriented ensemble in North Carolina. To unite the diversity of playing levels within the orchestra eachcomposition has been arranged with parts organized into five graded levels: Guitar I is the most advanced; Guitar III is the easiest part; Guitar V with (6) tuned down to low D and Guitar II and IV are intermediate levelparts. These works though easily realized with one player per part will sound more effective with several players per part. In some instances a part marked with divisi indicates that double stops are divided by two players:one player on the upper line and another player on the lower line.
