How Great Thou Art (Choral Score)

Par SCHOENBERG ARNOLD. ?Friede auf Erden? op. 13 is regarded as Arnold Schoenberg?s last tonal composition and is one of the few choral works of the Second Viennese School. On the same day that he completed his op. 13, Schoenberg made the first sketches for his 2nd String Quartet, a key work in atonal music. Although Schoenberg later orchestrated ?Friede auf Erden?, he intended the piece to be performed unaccompanied.To help rehearsing the work, this choral score contains the piano transcription made by Anton Webern for use in rehearsals for the planned first performance. The text for op. 13 is a secular Christmas poem by Conrad Ferdinand Meyer. At the time of its composition (1907), Schoenberg thought the vision of a ?reine Harmonie unter Menschen? (pure harmony amongst people) described in the poem was conceivable, but he later distanced himself from this idea. Includes a Piano part on the score for rehearsal purposes only.'My God why hast thou forsaken me?' was originally written in the summer of 2006 on a course run by the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. It was first performed by the choir of Eton College directed by Ralph Allwood. This motet intends to capture the anguish of Jesus’ final moments on the cross. The opening bars attempt to convey the horrific pain sorrow and tragedy that these words and the climactic moment of Christ's crucifixion mean to Christians worldwide. It is also a human sentiment echoed every day by the needy regardless of their religious views. Thepiece ends with a repetition of the opening phrase followed by a blossoming 'Amen'. This expressive conclusion hints at a glimmer of hope although the final chord is left unresolved; resolution though suggested is not obtained.

This work for soprano solo and SATB chorus was commissioned by the Norwich Festival of Contemporary Church Music.Tavener:'In the Orthodox Church the Lament of the Mother of God is normally sung on Holy and Great Friday. Inits full length it lasts about half and hour and it is intoned by the Priest or Bishop while the people venerate the Epitaphios (or Shroud of the Dead Christ) which is in the centre of the church and decorated withflowers.The Lament must be sung with an ikon-like stillness and great purity. It grows in intensity as it climbs in tessitura but without anything sudden or remotely melodramatic.For the Orthodox Church there is never thesense of absolute desolation felt by the Western Church on Good Friday. Hence the cry of the Mother of God 'Dost thou change my grief to gladness by thy Resurrection?' followed by the full forces: 'Rise O God and judge theearth.'Mother of God also features in the film Philomena starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan and directed by Stephen Frears.

Henry Purcell (1659-1695) held numerous appointments at the Royal Court and Westminster Abbey and is considered by many to be the greatest ever English-born composer. His prolific work covered all fields: orchestral ecclesiastical operatic theatrical incidental and chamber music were all enriched by his output. The evocative anthem Thou Knowest Lord (Z 58) was written in 1687 and later included in William Croft'ssetting of the Burial Service 'for reasons obvious to every artist'. It has been sung at every British State Funeral since.This arrangement by Vincent Knight is for SAB Choir and Organ.
