This piece is an adaptation of the instrumental movement Reflection in Kim André Arnesens large-scale work The Stranger. Arnesen was inspired by research showing the emotional effect of having eye contact with a stranger for only a few minutes. Studies have shown that this can develop deeper trust and empathy for each other. The idea was to have the audience facing each other to make eyecontact during the performance. With that being essential for peace among people, Arnesen used the texts “Dona nobis pacem” (“Grant us peace”) and “Miserere nobis” (“Have mercy on us”) for this version for choir. An optional piano part is supplied which not only supports the choral harmonies, but provides underlying momentum, though a slightly slower tempo is suggested if the piano accompaniment is used.

For SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied Dona nobis pacem combines two lines about peace from the Ordinary of the Latin Mass. A slow tempo lends grace and poise to the gentle, sustained vocal lines, and the composer juxtaposes homophonic and contrapuntal writing to great effect. The piece may be performed in the alternative key of B major.

This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The “Benedictus” is for SATB divisi and begins with a short 6/8 declamation, then moves into a section where the rhythmic idea is set in a sort of off-the-beat fashion, with all parts divisi playing against each other. A unison section with the off-the-beat motif follows. A majestic “Hosanna” follows. The “Agnus Dei” is set in a rubato triple meter in a homophonic style with close chords (also divisi.) At the “miserere,” the choir 1/choir 2 call and response motif from the “Gloria” returns. That same motif continues into the “dona nobis pacem,” as the movement (and the entire Mass) ends with a long decrescendo into a quiet call, “Pacem.” Duration 7:33.

In the rich chalumeau register, a solo (or soli) clarinet voice quietly introduces the hauntingly beautiful melody. Layering into the texture, other voices add timbre and depth. The phrasing is exquisite, and teaching opportunities for legato playing abound. A modulation from B-flat to E-flat allows even more sonorities as the work moves to its conclusion.
