Cyril Scott was an English composer, writer, and poet. He was essentially a late romantic composer, whose style was at the same time strongly influenced by impressionism. His harmony was notably exotic. Scott wrote around four hundred works,which include two mature symphonies, three operas, three Piano concertos,concertos for Violin, Cello, Oboe and Harpsichord, several overtures, four oratorios, as well as a mass of chamber music

The Rachmaninoff Critical Edition is a major Moscow-based publishing project, based on original manuscripts that will bring a new level of scholarship to the works of this ever-popular composer. Scheduled to publish over the next 10 years, Boosey & Hawkes will be distributing Urtext performing editions in up to fifty paperback volumes complete with extensive notes, commentaries and facsimiles. A piano version of an orchestral suite written whilst Rachmaninoff was a conservatoire student. Long considered lost, this work has only recently been discovered in the Glinka Museum archives.

All-Night Vigil (Vespers) is a setting of music for a night-long service on the eves of Russian Orthodox holy days, and became one of Rachmaninoff's favorite compositions. Basing the 15 movements of his choral setting on a combination of traditional Russian Orthodox chants, Latin hymns, and original chants by the composer, the work was completed in less than two weeks in 1915. This arrangement utilizes the 1st, 2nd, 7th, 10th, and 12th movements, along with the traditional Amens at the beginning of Movements 1 and 2. Unlike other settings of choral works for wind ensemble, this arrangement is constructed as a complete suite that is intended to allow the performers and audience to experience the power and beauty of the complete Vespers. Written in 2001, this work was conceived by the need to enlarge the repertoire of works for solo cello, an important goal since the repertoire of such works is limited. Most cellists are limited to performances of such well-known solo works as the Suites of Bach, written almost 300 years ago, as well as other classics of the genre by Max Reger, Zoltan Kodaly, Benjamin Britten, Gaspar Cassado, Enric Casals, etc.The intention of the Suite Exotique is to revolutionize the concept of the Baroque suite by transforming the suite into a collection of modern dances, which are both contemporary and widely recognized today. Thus, the dances of the Baroque suite, such as Allemande, Courante, Sarabande are substituted for the Tango, Milonga, Blues in such a way that the traditional formal structure of six movements of Baroque dances is modernized by rhythms and contemporary styles which coexist in the Modern world, but are separate from and do not pertain to those works which are normally considered to belong to the realm of cultured music.Apart from the fusion represented by the mixture of a Baroque genre with modern, urban musical language found in this work, the subtitle exotica is appropriate due to the originality of writing such a work for cello solo. This work allows the interpreter to explore and take full advantage of their technical, artistic and expressive abilities.This work establishes a total symbiosis between the instrument and the evolutionary transformation of its musical language which in turn creates a style adapted to the expressive requirements of the work itself. The specific techniques and qualities of the cello are placed in service of the required style and concept of each movement of the Suite. At the same time those stylistic characteristics are transformed and adapted to the particular characteristics of the cello and taking full advantage of the instruments polyphonic, sonic, aesthetic qualities as well as its timbre.The Suite Exotique was premiered in August, 2003 during the International Music Festival of Ibiza by the Russian cellist Svetlana Tovstukha.

Rimsky-Korsakov composed his three greatest orchestral works over a short period: he completed Capriccio Espagnol in 1887, and he composed Russian Easter Overture in 1888, simultaneously with the symphonic suite Scheherazade. Russian Easter Overture is a magnificent overture in a single movement that was dedicated to the composers Borodin and Moussorgsky. Several hymns of the Russian Orthodox Church create a characteristic atmosphere.
