The Mikado

Sir Arthur Sullivan wrote fourteen comic operas with librettist W. S. Gilbert plus overtures oratorios cantatas operettas and other incidental music. The Mikado was written in 1885 after a temperamental tantrum duringwhich Sullivan swore that inspiration was lost and that he “would never write another note.” Curiously some consider Mikado to be one of his finest comic operas.

Sir James Galway first came upon Gilbert and Sullivan's wonderful operettas while playing with Sadler's Wells Opera orchestra which later became the English National Opera. His fondness for good tunes with which the G&S operettas abound led to this collection created with longtime collaborator and arranger David Overton. Gilbert sets his story in Venice leaving the cloudy English sky for the sunny Mediterranean world. It is the tale of Casilda who is married at birth to the infant heir to the throne of barteria who is kidnapped soon afterwards. Twenty years later Casilda's family set out to find him. Naturally he turns out to be Casilda's own true love Luiz who she was forced to give up to look for her rightful husband. A fantasia from the seventeenth century and a trio from Gilbert and Sullivan's 'The Mikado' rub shoulders with music by Bach Mozart and Tchaikovsky. The music is arranged for two altos with either tenor or baritone. Grade: 5 - 8
