The Universe works in strange ways. Recorded almost three years ago, none of us could have known that when this recording was released the world would have lived through a life-altering pandemic or a tumultuous upheaval in the cultural awareness that now surrounds us. The work that opens this recording—with the words of Quaker George Fox that end with, “So be faithful, and live in that which doth not think the time long”—provides a haunting premonition regarding the time in which we live, Quaker George Fox is strangely prophetic about these days and perhaps provides a future caution for us all. The music chosen for this recording is strangely and poignantly relevant, I believe, for each of us. “The Fruit of Silence” by Pēteris Vasks reminds us to visit those beliefs that are most sacred in the work by Cortlandt Matthews. A deeply personal Requiem by Peter Relph, in reflection, remembers the hundreds of thousands of lives lost in the pandemic. And then there is Thomas LaVoy’s “O Great Beyond.” All great texts are timeless and speak to the universality of the human condition. Particularly, the George Fox text set by Jackson Hill and the Tagore text set by LaVoy give us messages to reinforce the humanness of each of us for hope. Two other works on this recording poignantly remind us of the passing of life, with the Relph Requiem and especially the final movement of “O Great Beyond.” May these words give comfort to all those who endured the deepest of Life’s losses during our shared pandemic journey. For so many loved ones, goodbyes were said in silence, and alone. It is our hope that all the music on this CD will show us a way for living as we move forward and also give loving comfort to those who have lost loved ones. Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet. Let it not be a death but completeness. Let love melt into memory and pain into songs. Let the flight through the sky end in the folding of the wings over the nest. Let the last touch of your hands be gentle like the flower of the night. Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a moment, and say your last words in silence. I bow to you and hold up my lamp to light you on your way. —Rabindranath Tagore in The Gardener (1913).

Composed for two guitars, this suite in three movements was inspired by a trip to northern Chile with two close friends whose lives have been dedicated to Human Rights activism and to whom the suite is dedicated. Each of the three movements evokes the spirit of the place where the music locates itself. The first movement, Tongoy Sea captures the sleepy seaside town of Tongoy on the Pacific coast with its long stretch of beach onto which spills the village, the fishing boats and the fish market while families gather in the local fish restaurants that line the beach looking out to sea. The second movement, Tololo Sky, recalls the long car drive up the winding mountain towards the Inter-American observatory, Cerro Tololo. Driving up the mountain I was struck by the starkness of our car winding its way on a single desert mountain road surrounded by a vast sky of an intense and translucent blue. The final movement, Elqui Earth, evokes the gentle slow pace of the town of Vicuña, birthplace of the poet Gabriela Mistral in the Elqui Valley. This fertile stretch of green with its abundant vineyards and fruit orchards stands out against the dry mountains that encircle it below a limpid sky. Dominique Le Gendre (2023).

Stainer & Bell are pleased to announce the publication of A Rainbow to Heaven, which brings together in one volume many of the musical settings and texts which are the fruit of June Boyce-Tillman's commitment to the empowerment of women. Her role as composer, performer, writer, teacher and theologian is faithfully reflected in 167 items, which draw on a diversity of traditional and modern sources to create a unique and inspiring collection. There is material here that relates to the themes of dance, healing, ecology, the medieval abbess Hildegard of Bingen, women saints, the Wisdom tradition, peace and justice, ecumenism and inter-faith dialogue, inclusive language and many other topics of contemporary interest. A fascinating introduction places the hymns, songs and chants in the context of June's evolving thought about the nature of music, worship, spirituality and the role of women.

The English conductor and composer Howard Arman has presented us with a completed version of Mozart??s Requiem. ??Another one?? you might ask, since this publication is only the latest in a long line reaching back to the traditional Sü?mayr version. Yet such is the enormous power of Mozart??s score that the challenge and appeal of completing it remain undiminished. After two decades of intensive study, Howard Arman??s additions to Mozart??s great original show the requisite care and respect while incorporating many new insights.Arman??s approach is particularly fruitful. Always aware of the appropriate limits to such re-creative work, he orients himself towards the typical characteristics of Mozart??s brilliant composing style: The masterly compositional technique, the search for innovative solutions to every problem, and even the terse treatment of the text with extremely suggestive harmonies. All of this leads to a number of new listening experiences. In the Tuba mirum, for example, we enjoy a warm, cohesive ensemble sound, supported by the bassoons, which depart from the bass line. The Confutatis presents a quite different picture: Even the basset horns are drawn down into the infernal depths. This effect is reinforced by the independence of the trombones; rather than simply following the choral parts, the instrument??s unique sound is given an opportunity to shine. Arman??s Lacrimosa achieves a lively Mozartian feel by granting the voices considerable freedom rather than following a rigid pattern. And he concludes the movement with a fugal Amen, whereby the focus is not so much on the counterpoint itself, but rather ?? in the spirit of Mozart ?? on creating a sense of drama and illuminating the theme in all its possible facets. Mozart??s fragment ends with the Hostias, and so does Arman??s completion. For the four following movements (Sanctus to Communio) we have nothing from Mozart, and so here, where the master is silent, Arman finally returns to Sü?mayr, the man who was closest to Mozart at the time of his death and whose efforts to fill the blank manuscripts still garner our respect today.Arman??s version has already proven its practical value. The premiere with the Bavarian Radio Choir was enthusiastically received by audiences and press alike ?? and celebrated as offering a scholarly, entirely fresh perspective on Mozart??s masterpiece.- World premiere by the Bavarian Radio Choir- Enthusiastically received by audience and press.
